Should We Pray?

I realize that is where you are coming from.  But from Teancum's perspective this isn't so much about the Lord as it is about you and those who hold a position similar to yours.

Many insist God has told them they have the truth. And many hold to a truth that differs from yours or mine. Who is right ?

It is about me being right. Its about me being right about what is right for me.

Ok. I cam lies with that. So if. Muslim beleive they are right for them is that good? Are they in as good of a position as you?

Teancum, are you saying that you can't know?  Know in the sense that the results are indisputable by any party observing with integrity?

And since you can't know, it's arrogant to act as though you do?

Would it be fair to say we're - I don't want to say lying, as that's kinda harsh, but, maybe, say, disingenuous?

Personally I think to say I KNOW I HAVE THE ONE TRUTH, OR BEST TRUTH, is well...I don't know. Wrong? Saying I strongly believe or have faith seems better.

You seem to really resist confident language. I don't blame you, but I don't agree with the negative reactions.

Baptist Guy is just as certain as Mormon Guy.

Both claim divine sanction and both are mutually exclusive. How to tell which is 'correct' is less about suspension of faith for objective discovery and more about using the framework you have faith in to evaluate. That's all anyone can do.

I trust God to judge sincerity of thought and activities against such.

We are living out the parable of the talents. Go pick yours back up and join us. ;)

I am working on it but lean more to the world of a skeptic.

Eta: in this way I am no better than the bushman of Micronesia with no understanding of Jesus Christ, the Muslim, Baptist Guy, Other Mormon Guy, or you - the atheist/agnostic just trying to get by.

Not one of us will be able to BS our way through an honest accounting of our thoughts, words, and deeds.

Judged by our actions against our sincere understanding of good and bad, right and wrong. This is the beauty of Mormon Theology.

I believe you.

Fair enough, brother.

I too have a problem with believing everything every body in gospel doctrine class says.

I can only judge what God has told me and do my best to listen to Him.  I don't bother trying to figure out whether or not what other people say He's told them is true or not.  There is no way for me to judge the experiences of others.

But we all believe that we are right in some of our beliefs and opinions and that those who disagree with us are wrong.  That doesn't make us arrogant.  We might be wrong, but someone can be wrong and not arrogant.

From what I've seen on TV lately, if a Muslim is standing behind you with a big sword or knife in his hand and you are kneeling with your hands tied behind your back, I would say that muslim is in a better position than you at that moment.

Do not demean other religions on our board.

Skepticism is healthy as long as it allows for hope.  The difficulty that a skeptic might find in acquiring hope is that hope has an element of uncertainty and requires trust in imperfect humans.  Skeptics are naturally skeptical of uncertainty and resist being duped.

To overcome this, one must learn to deviate their attention from the uncertainty and the trust in other humans, and learn to trust in ones own ability to be led by God.  This self-trust and God-trust will develop and grow over time and become more refined.  The point is, one must begin the path somewhere and expect to be wrong at times.  Don't be afraid of making mistakes as long as your integrity and your intentions are pure.  Our perspective becomes more clear as we learn and grow line upon line, precept upon precept.  Instead of judging an entire religion as true or untrue, test the principles, study the lines one at a time, and add upon those lines.  Start by studying one single principle such as charity, humility, hope, forgiveness, and most importantly - prayer.  Build your foundation.
