thesometimesaint Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 So you are suggesting because Jesus was dead, he had nothing to do with the deaths of Ananias and Sapphira? Tell you what, if i was the last person to see another person alive, and that person was found dead a few minutes later. The police would have quite a few questions for me that wouldn't include God doing it.
Coreyb Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 Yeah, but He does not encourage it much amongst His followers. Not really, the cleansing of the temple was violent but it was nothing like the threat implicit in Roosevelt's quote. Roosevelt was threatening, saying you needed force to back a pleasant demeanor. Jesus was cleansing a religious building. He was not a perpetual threat to the order of the temple. He was not encouraging his apostles to arm themselves and defend himself and the gospel with the sword. So no, nothing like it.He did here 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the **** shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

I don't see the most powerful man in the world suggesting that "velvet gloves over an iron fist" is the best way to deal with politics being in any way equivalent to Jesus telling his followers in an obscure religious sect surrounded by enemies that it might be a good idea to carry a sword for self-defense. That would be like saying Stalin's political thought process is the same as that of a person who takes a class in basic self-defense/physical combat.

I was just pushing back with an instance where Jesus did in fact tell his disciples to get swords to defend themselves and the gospel so that nobody would be left to infer that Jesus would NEVER say anything like that.
