Christian Mormon Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I'm looking for the best lds book about the teachings of paul. Any recommendations?
Duncan Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) Richard L. Anderson has a book on him, the 23rd annual-1994 Sperry Symposium is about him and BYU Prof. Thomas Wayment has a book on him as well Edited September 30, 2014 by Duncan 2
Nevo Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I think the best LDS book about the teachings of Paul remains Richard Lloyd Anderson's Understanding Paul. A bibliography of articles about Paul's teachings can be found here. In the non-LDS realm, James D.G. Dunn's The Theology of Paul the Apostle and N.T. Wright's Paul and the Faithfulness of God are two heavy hitters on the subject.
cinepro Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I'm looking for the best lds book about the teachings of paul. Any recommendations? I would recommend the New Testament. I hear it's very good.
Nevo Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I would recommend the New Testament. I hear it's very good. I second the recommendation—but in a translation other than the KJV, which garbles and obscures Paul's meaning more often than not).
halconero Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I second the recommendation—but in a translation other than the KJV, which garbles and obscures Paul's meaning more often than not). Shameless plug for the New Revised Standard Version, and more specifically the New Oxford Annotated version (NRSV on steroids). The HarperCollins is great too. My favourite garbling of Paul is found in Galatians: KJV - I would they were even cut off which trouble you. (The LDS footnote says this is "excommunication" btw) NRSV (a more accurate rendering) - I wish those who unsettle you would castrate themselves! (when performing circumcision for Gentile-Christians)
ksfisher Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 NRSV (a more accurate rendering) - I wish those who unsettle you would castrate themselves! (when performing circumcision for Gentile-Christians)I'm guessing we're not going to hear this quoted in conference soon."And in closing I would like to quote the words of Paul when he wrote..."
