Kimball) details the last few years of President Kimball's life, and it appears that while most members of the Church didn't know the specific details of President Kimball's health problems, they knew he was incapacitated. For example, here is what President Hinckley said in April 1984, when Elders Maxwell and Nelson were called to be apostles and people wondered how much input President Kimball had with the selection: This work is a great and important part of his grand, eternal plan. It is the Church of Jesus Christ. It bears his name. He stands at the head; we are but his servants. Our desire is to do his will: to be sensitive to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit, and then to go forward with faith to accomplish whatever he has commanded. He has placed a prophet on the earth. Though he is advanced in age, he is the prophet of the Lord, and he will be with us for as long as the Lord wills. And as the Lord’s appointed servant, no major decision concerning this work will be made without his consideration and his direction. Jeanne Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 People in line...well, what happens to revelation if it goes this way? There could be one further "down the line" that has beenpre-ordained or has been selected for a certain generation. Collective "keys" should also include inspiration.

Well some think that God will only allow the senior apostle to be the next prophet, and any who should not become the prophet or aren't completely worthy/ready for the role will die before succeeding.Personally, I think that does happen, but won't necessarily always happen. I think (based on D&C 43:4) that it is entirely possible for the prophet to name an apostle other than the senior to succeed him if he felt by revelation that it was God's will.

Maybe I should have clarified that all of us who could think knew it. I vividly recall them hauling Pres. Kimball to a conference where he sat slumped in his chair the entire session. But since I don't believe the president of the church actually does much anyway, it didn't really bother me. It bothered me more that they tried to hide it and give the general membership some notion that Kimball and Benson got up every day and went to their offices and actually spoke to their counselors and the Twelve.
