Nevertheless, led by Grant, who had become President of the Church in 1918, LDS leaders continued to support national Prohibition. This argument seems a little juvenile but I think that "Hey, it only hurts me" has some merit. We should be free to do things even if it is going to kill us. I think that is why you see a difference when it is gay marriage or abortion. Now people could argue that alcohol abuse effect more than just the individual and I think that there is a lot to debate in that area too. But I think there is a big difference between the 2 er 3. 1

It is the recreational use of drugs, including alcohol, that is the problem. As a function of law I see the US classification of marijuana as a class A drug. Add in the subsequent over prosecution of the drug users is a bigger problem than the actual psycho-physical effects of the drug warrant. That being said the stuff isn't good for you, and just because something is legal doesn't mean you should do it.True, french fries are legal in most states.

If same-sex marriage was being legalized in the same way as marijuana (you don't go to jail for doing it, but you also don't receive any benefits) the Church would have left it alone.It is a difference of allowance vs promotion.-guerreiro9

IE; X-Ray radiation exposure isn't good for you. But it is indispensable in modern medicine.

We could do the same thing with the natural stuff, but since it is illegal they pay big pharma to make it artificially. What a strange world we live in. I was at my daughter in laws house, she is a supervising attendant at an ER at a university run hospital, when they had an emergency...they had run out of beer to treat patients with severe DTs. Oh my.

The problem comes in what is a standard dosage strength? Currently there is no recognized standardization for medical grade marijuana like there is for X-ray photography in medicine.
