The diamond business involves incredible price collusion, price-fixing, market manipulation and other immorality, and that is just by the "legitimate" players.  Diamonds are actually quite plentiful, and the only reason why retail prices are so high is because of actions by DeBeers and other to keep the prices artificially high.  DeBeers alone sits on a pile of diamonds that they will never sell, because to do so would reduce the prices that they can charge.  They also buy up diamonds dug up by other companies, just to keep them off the market.  And then there are "blood diamonds". 

 

Many other commodities are produced in environments that would amount to slavery if done here in the USA, and we sop them up not knowing that we are helping perpetuate human trafficking and oppression.  Although, if we stopped buying such products, the producers would fire their workers and perhaps they would be worse off than before!  We can't seem to escape some form of complicity in wrong-doing.

Wasn't cannibis a regular crop for many US farmers prior to the 1930s? What complicity or wrong-doing could come from US farmers cultivating legal crops of marijuana, which could be used for textiles, medicine and recreational use?

You want to clarify with where you are going with this.

What's not clear? If you buy a diamond, can you be sure you're not participating in some "blood diamond" ring? Maybe this particular stone was part of a sale that is helping to finance a terrorist organization. The diamond industry itself has a lot of shady dealings going on, so buying a diamond perhaps makes you part of it.

Just like a drug user who buys cocaine from a street dealer is contributing to lawlessness in Columbia or Venezuela, or other place where the coca leaves were grown.

What if you buy a pair of shoes that was manufactured in China by slave labor?

That's what I am talking about.
