Thinking Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I have noticed that some faithful LDS approach a commandment with an attitude of obeying the spirit of the law while others follow it to the letter. Some of those who follow the letter on one commandment might follow the spirit on another. Keeping the Sabbath Day holy is one example. Some are very strict in their Sabbath Day observence, even remaining in their Sunday clothes while reading scriptures and listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Others are more relaxed on Sunday, allowing family members to play or watch TV. R-rated movies are also approached differently. Some won't see any R-rated movie, while others decide by examining the reason for the R rating. Thoughts?

In my experience, somebody will claim to be following the spirit of the law when he is not following the letter.

In order to feel the Spirit prompting you to obey the Spirit of the law you need to first obey the commandments or letter of the law. A person who is doing that rarely needs to justify doing that because the Spirit makes him confident that he chose right. Those around him see his actions rightly in the Spirit. The one claiming to follow the Spirit loudly usually is trying to prove to himself or others that he is doing what God wants when really he is justifying doing what he wants.Most of the time.

strappinglad Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 For some reason people are never satisfied with 'the' letter of the law, they need at least 26 letters. My understanding is that the Jews took the 10 commandments and expanded them to over 600. Kind of like TAX law. The letter killeth is very appropriate! 1
