The sealing power is not limited to the nuclear family, but is more importantly a sealing to the family of God.  We cannot be saved with them and they cannot be saved without us.  It demands a much broader understanding of what our commitment is one to another; we never serve strangers, rather we serve our brothers and sisters.

What does it matter we'll all be sealed to each other anywho?  Presuming we all become exalted.  Why?  Because that's what this is all about.  I am sealed to my wife, my kids are sealed to me, my kid one day will be sealed to Cinepro's kid and thus that binding sealing somehow seals my family to his.  And we'll all be grownups anyway.  I'll be sealed to my kid but he'll be an adult who is sealed to his own kids who will be adults and I'll be sealed to my grandkids who are sealed to their own spouses who up the chain are sealed to say, Joseph Smith, thus linking me to Joseph Smith himself.  The binding is such that we all become one as the Son is one with the Father, who'll also both be adults like the rest of us.

I've heard it described as the human family being like a chain... all linked and going perfectly back to Adam to be given to the Father.

Just because a sealing can mean other things doesn't mean it isn't a sealing in marriage, between a husband and wife.

I think this is a cop out. I think some people think the Lord is going to sit there like the Rev. Moon and decide who goes with who. We're going to have to figure it out for ourselves. We will have to choose and stand by our choice in my view.

It is not a cop out.  President Kimball is stating something very doctrinal, in my opinion.  He stated that the child-parent sealing entitled the child to eternal parentage regardless of what happened to the parents in the end, assuming that the child's faithfulness made that promise operative.

So, do you imagine that their sealing and/or BIC state with regard to their excommunicated father (in the case of my stepchildren) is unbreakable and they will be sealed to him even if he ultimately inherits the telestial kingdom?  Even though the youngest three of them were raised by me, and call ME father?  That is an absurd result -- perhaps you prefer absurdity when it comes to matters of eternal significance?  I have always assumed that if I remained faithful that I would eventually be set into place as their patriarchal lineage father.  You think it will be different from that, all things being equal?

I have absolutely no idea. But I do think that we will be required to study it out for ourselves, come to a (perhaps negotiated) conclusion and then take it to God. We can't just make a mess of things down here (I'm speaking generally, and absolutely not about you and your situation) and then assume he will sort it all out without our input. He doesn't work like that here, so why would he change his MO there?
