rockpond Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I thought that this was a very interesting guest post on "Pure Mormonism". I think the author is a little harsh but I understand the place that she's coming from - and I think it is a very important perspective. I also think that Rock's postscript was spot on for the way I feel as well. What do you think? http://puremormonism.blogspot.com/2014/06/uncomfortable-god.html
thesometimesaint Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) Hyperbole isn't her strong suit. I'm sure she was rightly "offended" when Jesus called the scribes and Pharisees "Whited Sepulcher which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness". Popular Post ksfisher Posted June 10, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 10, 2014 I thought that Elder Holland's talk was beautiful and very appropriate for the day we are living in. It's sad to read the words of those who are so critical of the brethren whom we sustain as prophets, seers, and revelators. 7
Popular Post mnn727 Posted June 10, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 10, 2014 From the articleUntold thousands of faithful, believing members are now becoming disillusioned with Church leadership. andAs I and others have discovered, some in leadership positions within the modern LDS Church have not reacted kindly to those lowly members who have drawn attention to the dichotomy between the Church today and the one founded through Joseph Smith. What???!! That's really all the reading I need to do to know its someone with an agenda that thinks they know better than God does how to run this Church. 9

rockpond Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 From the articleand What???!! That's really all the reading I need to do to know its someone with an agenda that thinks they know better than God does how to run this Church. I believe that the first statement you quoted is most likely true (based on online interactions) not anything I can prove. The second statement could be based on the disciplinary action (threatened & executed) on a couple well known LDS bloggers recently.
rockpond Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 What is the perspective you get from it? The perspective of people who would like the church to move away from some of what they feel is the periphery and back to the core gospel principles.
mnn727 Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 My one question would be: Is this Gods Church or man's Church? If they believe it to be Gods Church they need to sit down and humble themselves. If they believe it to be man's Church they why would they want to be a member?

You seem to be overlooking the possibility that someone can believe it's God's church without believing every decision or conference address to be His word. 4
Popular Post bluebell Posted June 10, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 10, 2014 It was an interesting post. I don't want to critique it. She's not coming from where i am, and i'm not coming from where she is and since we are not on the same 'plane' i don't think there is any way to critique her post that would be at all beneficial (and i'm not saying that my 'plane' is better than her's-just that they are not touching at the moment). She obviously believes that she knew better than Elder Holland did what kind of message should have been delivered, or she would not have taken the time to point out and elaborate exactly how wrong his message was. I don't understand that perspective, but i'm sure that stems from not understanding the talk in the same way that she understands it. Because i personally loved it. Speaking more broadly and not about this one post, i think it's great that everyone has the opportunity to share their perspectives with each other online, as long as we try to remember that we are speaking for ourselves and not for our Father in Heaven, and we don't get caught up in our own awesomeness when we find an audience that applauds us. I have no idea why one perspective would be seen as more important or better than another though. 6
Buckeye Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 My one question would be: Is this Gods Church or man's Church? In the way you've phrased it, the answer is "neither." The underlying work is God's. And He will see that His word is fulfilled. Sometimes church members are in synch with that work. Sometimes not. Eventually "the church" will be perfected and then it can be called "God's," but that is a long time off. The church, and its members, are very much a work in process.
bluebell Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 You seem to be overlooking the possibility that someone can believe it's God's church without believing every decision or conference address to be His word. Maybe mnn was talking about the accusation (that's probably too strong of a word but i can't think of another one that would be more appropriate right now) in the post that this church is moving away from what God intends it to be, and what it once was. Beyond the criticism of Elder Holland specifically, that seems to be the broader implication of the entire blog post, which seemed to use the guest blogger's words to support that assertion.

Good point. So I guess the answer to mnn is that some do believe in the early restoration (and so they want to stay members) but also believe that the church has strayed.

rockpond Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Do those people find it easier to believe in dead prophets than living ones? Why should anyone have to choose?
Opinion Slayer Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I feel bad for anybody that is in opposition by opinion to any Prophet/Apostle when it comes to the doctrine of Christ. Seriously when the tribulations come those who do not show fierce loyalty to the Lord and his prophets are going to have a really hard time enduring to the end!Kicking against the pricks is very unwise... But maybe that's why the Lord has said My sheep hear my voice. 2

Because she doesn't really seem to be in opposition to any prophet/apostle when it comes to the doctrine of Christ. I think the author is sincerely trying to hear and follow the Lord's voice.
ksfisher Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I think the author is sincerely trying to hear and follow the Lord's voice. While at the same time saying that the Lord's prophets and apostles have steered the church off course. It's hard to hear the Lord's voice when you are so busy criticizing his servants. I hope that doesn't sound too harsh, but I feel very strongly about it. We can either follow the prophet or we can follow some other path. I know which path I'm striving to be on. 4

ksfisher Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I think that we are supposed to follow the Lord (through the Spirit), not the prophet. So there is no need for a prophet at all, or any other type of church leader.

What do you think?http://puremormonism.blogspot.com/2014/06/uncomfortable-god.htmlSounds to me like his talk hit a nerve in her and in response she lashed out trying to make it seem as if he should have praised most people outside of the church, and many people in it, as people who are doing the very best they can do. As if we should all have a barbeque together, eating and drinking and being merry together, relaxing and getting comfortable together. As if we're all going to be alright whatever we do and believe. The nerve of some people, to say we still have a long way to go before we can just be comfortable and sing kumbaya together. 2

The main message? She said that what she believes God is asking of her was challenging and uncomfortable. It was actually the opposite of what you're asserting here.
