Is This A Real Flyer Or A Spoof (Mormonsandgays.org)?

Recommended Posts

Iirc the idea was to print them up and put them on bulletin boards in churches. Given how they use the Church's copyright trademark rather than a spoof, it is a fraud, isn't it?

Can't remember if the only purpose was to convey the idea SSM was acceptable (wedding ring shown) or the scan code would take someone to a nonLDS site.

Good point, I didn't realise they were designed for a "guerrilla" campaign in churches. Thanks for the clarification.

If it is a spoof, it is one where they used the official logo or listing of the Church. Those who have SSA, may not choose how they feel, but we all (no matter how we feel) choose how we act. In this case they choose to break the law, by making it appear that it is indeed a Church publication. Spoof are supposed to be funny, not criminal. Looks like something Bill Mahr would do...only he hates all faiths equally. But at least he is funny at times and always consistent in his hated of believers.

What happens when you scan the code? Everything else about it actually looks legit (website and all).  I'm curious now if the scan code take you to a different website or not.

Must be a spoof.  The church's position is that persons who experience same-sex attraction should not perform any actions that further the attraction.  Thus, while BYU no longer expels students just for being gay, the university may take actions if gay students hold hands, kiss, or otherwise show affection.  I can't imagine that the image included in this ad - two men showing affection typical of married heterosexuals - would appear on a church publication.

Edit to add:  also, at least one of the men in the picture has a wedding ring.  No way that would make it past correlation.

a google image search reveals

"Montclair couple threatens lawsuit after their photo is used in anti-gay mailer

Montclair couple Brian Edwards and Tom Privitere were shocked to find that one of their engagement photos was being used unlawfully in attack adds against a Colorado senator. In the ad, sponsored by Public Advocate of the United States, the men are removed from their original backdrop of a New York skyline, and instead appear amidst a snowy Colorado setting with the tagline, "State Sen. Jean White's Idea of 'Family Values?'" Now the couple, along with their photographer are taking action."

Elder D. Todd Christofferson “Is There a Place For Me?” online at https://mormonandgay.lds.org/articles/church-teachings?cid=HP_TH_24-8-2017_dPAD_fMG_xLIDyL2-2_  .
“The diversity we find now in the Church may be just the beginning.  Frankly, I think we’ll see greater and greater diversity.  In the ancient Church there was tremendous diversity.
“And it’s not just diversity for diversity’s sake, but the fact that people can bring different gifts and perspectives.  And the wide range of experience, backgrounds, and challenges that people face will show us what really is essential in the Gospel of Christ, and that much of the rest that’s been perhaps acquired over time is more cultural than doctrinal, can slip away, and we can really learn to be disciples.”
This is just an excerpt of his short remarks, and other apostles also comment under the same heading.  Does this bode well for the Church?  Is it an important first step to see the difference between culture and doctrine?  Where might this eventually lead?

Here a new approach to survey Mormons with same sex attraction. It was formulated by people of different backgrounds as to establish some sort of balance on the topic.
And apparently there are already some positive results of feeling more empowered to talk about Mormons with same sex attractions.
