Can't find it now but Joseph Smith is reported to have said that he longed for the day when every member was a prophet in their own right.I long for that too.
Avatar4321 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Me too, Avatar... it would break my heart and cause me to review in my mind and prayers all of the spiritual witnesses I've been given... about the BoM... about several important foundational issues... about the gospel in general... I would be in prayer all the more. That "still small voice" is unmistakeable. I would hope that the peace that accompanied would help me...This "what if" scenario seems so speculative because I'm sure the 15 members of the leadership have heard that voice and received numerous witnesses of the Spirit to the point that it would seem unlikely they would lose their faith... but, as pointed out, several others have done just that...GGAnyone can fall into Apostasy. Brigham Young often prayed that he wouldn't fall into Apostasy. He said to never say you won't because that allows pride to enter into your life.I would pray for all of them to remain faithful and strengthen us and our brethren.
Avatar4321 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Amasa Lyman gave some great talks in Journal of Discourses over the decades before he left the reservation and went bonkers (denying the atonement, and repeatedly teaching it in England, despite censure and warnings). Richard R. Lyman was excommunicated for polygamy in the modern era (It's happened before.1940s, wasn't it?). So it has happened before.Shame about the Lymans.

If his lost faith had something to do with personal behavioral changes, I don't think it would have much of an impact. If, however, he revealed things about the church that called into question its foundational claims, the impact would be much greater.

But his case is a bit different.It was said here this morning that no person ever apostatized without actual transgression. Omission of duty leads to apostasy. We want to live so as to have the Spirit every day, every hour of the day, every minute of the day; and every Latter-day Saint is entitled to the Spirit of God, to the power of the Holy Ghost, to lead him in his individual duties. (Brigham Young, JD 10:296)And it can be ever too easy to lose that Spirit, as we all know. I know this idea is derided by many these days, because so many "lose their faith" over historical matters, but I still believe it.
