Hey, y'all. I put a post up today over at By Common Consent about the new Maxwell Institute Blog, slated to appear this coming Monday. The first post will have a really exciting announcement. No spoilers here, though. If you want to be notified with the address when the blog goes live, subscribe to our new Twitter feed, @MI_BYU, or check back here or at BCC for the link. I’ll add it as soon as it’s available. As you might guess, it's a super busy time right now, so I'll be in and out. Meantime, there has been an announcement at http://maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/news/index.php?id=158&type=news that there is a "Temporary Loss of Access to the Review

We are in the process of reformatting some of the HTML coding in Review articles to standardize their look. We are also checking all of the pdfs (and adding a cover sheet) as we prepare to publish them in the Online Journal System of BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library. While we are working on this, the affected issues do not show up on our live site. This is very temporary—we get them back up as soon as they are reformatted—but we apologize for the inconvenience to our readers."

Your blog here has a photo of a sealing room with the caption "Salt Lake temple’s East Sealing Room (1911) sneakily photographed by Gisbert Bossard".

Should the link to the blog be allowed in this forum? Is this the kind of stellar scholarship coming from the MI?

You're not serious I'm sure... pictures of temple rooms in full color have been published in booklet form for years... beautiful...

In fact, I send copies to my non-LDS extended family members, particularly when I was an temple worker so they would have some idea of the purpose of our temples, and be able to see the various rooms.

You are right. I'm responding to a fairly transparent yet feeble attempt to manufacture controversy against Blair and the MI.

Actually, I read the blog post back in September that was referred to; that was more interesting to me. Especially liked Bushman's comment about the temple.

In my opinion, you have your work cut out for you as the PC person for the MI. That's going to be a very, very difficult job.

I hope that the Maxwell Institute is not planning to move the FARMS Review from their web site onto the Harold B. Lee library site. It will cause us a major headache is we have to re-link every reference to the MI from the FAIR Wiki. Right now anyone that attempts to look up a FARMS Review article is referred to the BYU Bookstore where they can supposedly purchase a copy!

I might add that reformatting publications for inclusion on another site does NOT require removing the versions of the publications that are currently online while you do it.

If removing the FARMS Review from the MI website is part of the "new direction" then I'm not happy about it at all. Perhaps Blair will have a chance to clear this up?

If you directly traverse the MI site, you can get to the Review. I don't know if some issues are missing, or if the link structure has changed, but at least some content is still there.

I wonder if perceived examples of "bad" Mormon Studies or apologetics will be "memory-holed" under Bradford. Then, the site for past articles can just be one of those about:blank web pages . . . :)

Ironically that photo is what led to temple photos being distributed by the Church. That photo was taken without permission and then the photographer demanded money from the Church not to release it. It was basically blackmail. The Church responded by releasing their own photos of temples to take away the ammunition of the blackmailer. It could be argued using that photo was tasteless. It would have been a hundred years ago. Now....probably not.

We're not planning to remove any of our past content, all of which should currently be available on the website. (I just checked a handful of links and they worked.) I think there's still a notice on our homepage which needs to be removed, but there are some other changes on the horizon making that update section a lower priority. It isn't very exciting to say, but the articles were missing simply because of formatting issues. If you're familiar with the old website you'll see differences in the way articles--especially the headings--are formatted. I'm not sure why there was a problem with some of the more recent issues in that regard other than there was a coding issue, but it should be resolved now. With the new blog coming out next week we're aiming for an increasingly well-put-together web presence, so in the near future all articles, etc. will be even easier to access in a variety of formats than they currently are.

For people offering condolences about my new job, don't cry for me, Argentina. The truth is I'm having a great time and we have some great announcements coming up.

Though I'm a bit done with MI "teases" and am waiting MI "publications".

How about MI publications that finally illustrate the "New and Real Mormon Studies" (the anti-bad apologetics)? Like emarkp, I'm also "done with MI 'teases' and am waiting MI 'publications.' " The best PR move you and MI can make is to actually put out quality stuff that will put the concerns of many to rest. Blogs and twitter chatter are bush league stuff that amateurs and novices can (and do) do, and don't require an "institute." Past "teases" have hinted at seven titles in 2013, but pointedly refused to name them or commit to dates. Published works that weren't already in the pipeline under the Peterson regime would help, too.

I couldn't have said it better myself. One step at a time, so hang in there, rongo. Meantime, check out Faulconer's The Life of Holiness. We should also have a few new videos available soon, coverage of the recent lectures by James Jardine and Royal Skousen.

I will always remember the first time I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark, in the fall of 1981, at the old, classic Villa Theatre on Highland Drive in Salt Lake City. It was one of the few times I saw fulfilled the old sales pitch of, "You pay for the whole seat, but all you need is the edge." Of course, it was, as everyone knows, a really great film. That said, I always found it humorous that Rene Belloq was apparently convinced that all he had to do was don the vestments of the high priest in order to open and then (presumably) assume all the powers attendant to the Ark of the Covenant.

Of course, it didn't work out quite as he had planned ...

Memories! That is one of my favorite movies, too! I own it on Blu Ray. I think we need to have a Raiders marathon next weekend. I love all of those movies. :D
