What Has The New Farms Produced?

Recommended Posts

Bumping this for Carl.

What are the authors and titles of the 6-7 books MI will publish this year? How many of them are completed manuscripts actually in production?

There is nothing confidential about this information whatsoever. University publishers regularly include a forthcoming section in their catalogs. It is standard publishing procedure.

Bill,

I want to make sure I understand you.

Are you calling Carl a liar? Perhaps I should ask: are you trying to imply Carl is being untruthful

I would, of course, be surprised if this is the case given that I know you would never publicly accuse someone of something that could be possibly detrimental to their employment. Last time I checked, the honor code takes lying pretty seriously and this could disqualify someone from employment at BYU.

Perhaps they should add a clause to the honor code about not bearing false witness and essentially simply being a decent, mature adult. You know, one who doesn't **** about his employer online for months and months and months.

Also, I read a very interesting blog post by Patrick Mefford about your most recent DN article:

http://servileconformist.typepad.com/servile-conformist/2013/02/hamblin-and-peterson-might-as-well-be-a-couple-of-rocks.html

Bill, have you ever read Aristotle? As long as we are asking questions about people's integrity I would love to hear you respond to Patrick who, rather than implying you are not familiar with Aristotle, simply flat out states you don't know Aristotle and you completely misrepresent his work.

With all the lying and liars in the world why is it so anathema to suggest someone is a liar or is lying?

Must we lie to ourselves about others lying to protect their pretended dignity? Will this not lead to an endless cycle of lies?

To paraphrase the wisdom of Peter Venkmann:

Next time someone asks you if you are calling them a liar you say "YES!"

Well, we all know "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" ;)

True, but it seems that DCP has already confirmed that the MI has a heck of a pipeline.

So either Bill is calling Carl a liar or doesn't believe DCP.....

And plus..... perhaps the narrator or someone in publishing can chime in. I don't have a lot of experience but when I was the president/publisher of the Yale Economic Review I know we certainly had many many articles in the pipeline .... granted we were not publishing books but part of publishing, as far as I can tell, is managing a healthy pipeline.

Plus, seems like a really stupid thing to be dishonest about .... especially in a post meant to dispel the misinformation that has been generated from rumors and innuendo. I don't know Carl .. have only exchanged an email or two but he doesn't strike me as the liar type.

We don't allow that on this board. People can disagree or understand differently without being liars. So stop agitating for it.

Very glad to hear it but didn't realize asking Bill for clarification was "agitating" for it (not sure what "it" is ...). Regardless, I'll bow out of this thread so as not to further derail.

I am looking forward to Bill withdrawing his accusations against Carl.

Is it too much to ask that if you are going to accuse someone of lying that you have the stones to do so without veiled innuendo? What's next, will we see a "CARL IS A LIAR" accrostic in the next Interpreter offering from Bill?

I've called people liars but I try to own it. I don't think that is asking to much.

Which is what I'm trying to understand. If Bill is calling Carl a liar then he should have the guts to just come out and say it. Why be so coy and cowardly?

I am sorry to report I was also mocking you with your dramatic "Are you calling xxxx a liar?" As if it is some holy offense before God and just retribution can only be exacted in a pistol duel at dawn.

Note: All will be forgiven if there is an actual pistol duel and you post it on youtube (dawn preferred but any time is permissable).

Everyone needs to get back on topic.

Carl Griffin is real, and thanks for the congratulations. For anyone interested in what I've been up to recently, check out my ongoing series at BCC on intellectual disability in Mormon thought and history. Looking forward to working with the Maxwell Institute. :)

Big time congrats! What a great opportunity- and you deserve it!

All Carl has to do is list the 6-7 books he claims will be published this year. A very simple task for the associate director of the center. In fact, I know of one--Sorenson's new book of the BOM. (That book, by the way, has been in production for a couple of years. The completed manuscript has been in the hands of the publisher for over a year, and won't appear--at last rumor--until late 2013.) So, Carl only has to come up with five more.

I've been told privately that the list is confidential. That's the first time I've ever heard of a publisher who wants to hide the list of their forthcoming books.

Ummm.... Yale University Press keeps some of their publications under wraps for quite a while as details are worked out, permissions sought from copyright holders etc...

But ... in the spirit of openness, why not tell us when you plan to publish the John Dehlin hit piece by Greg Smith? We keep hearing from you that it will come ... but when?? These things aren't secret, right? And there is no way you would ever be a petty hypocrite, right?

Link to comment

I've told you many times I'm confident the Dehlin piece will be published at some point. As of yet I don't know when or where. It is not a hit piece. I've read it, you haven't. Please quit slandering Greg Smith.

But notice, I didn't say I have 6 books that will be published this year. I never gave any date about any publication. On the other hand, Carl said "I expect we will publish at least 6-7 new books this year." That is in the next ten months. If this is true, then clearly the manuscripts have been accepted and a publication schedule planned.

Why is this list of six forthcoming books for this year a secret? Why in the world would a publisher hide their forthcoming book list?

This isn't a devious question. It isn't an attack. I sincerely would like to know what the six books are. Any publisher would be delighted to give publicity to their forthcoming books.

How can a simple request for a list of forthcoming books in any way be construed as an act of hypocrisy or an attack.

If the Maxwell Institute has six books forthcoming in 2013, why can't he simply tell us what they are? All other publishers in the world do so.

For example, I can tell you that vol 3 of Interpreter should be available in the next couple of weeks. I can also report that Interpreter's first book, the proceedings of the Temple on Mount Zion conference, is being edited, and will probably be available in fall 2013, though it isn't quite far enough along to give a more precise date.

See. It's simple and painless.

the John Dehlin hit piece by Greg Smith

You mean, the one that we keep in the stable with our jackalope and our three unicorns on the shores of Loch Ness, just outside of Brigadoon?

I'm genuinely curious about the titles of these twenty-seven books and how far along in the "pipeline" they are. In fact, I'd be interested to know just the name of the six or seven books (at least) that will be published this very year.

Here is Yale's spring 2013 catalog, all of which are forthcoming books.

http://yalepress.yal...SPRING 2013.pdf

As you all can tell, Yale is very busy hiding their list of forthcoming books from their potential readers.

I think Carl's new marketing technique--not telling anyone the names of your forthcoming books--will soon sweep the publishing world, and become the new norm throughout the industry.

Peppermint Patty said:

Except when we don't....

Dan and several others who were enthusiatic players were not just benched by the team's coach, but kicked off the team itself.

While I appreciate Mr. Peterson's work and the other apologists that were there to stop the "uncontested slam dunks", I read events a little differently from last summer.

To me it sounded like the current contributors to the Interpreter were told by their coach to play good defense, but instead they went out and just fouled other players. Eventually, to use your analogy, a coach needs to bench them, and if behavior doesn't change, remove them from the team.

(Of course, I'm sure there is MUCH more to the story that will probably never come out, but that's just the way I read events. I'm always willing to change my opinion (ha, the Lord knows I have on so many occasions).

I'm not quite sure, Seth, why you felt the need to bring this issue into the discussion on this thread. If, as it seems, it was just to be snotty, I have to admit that I'm disappointed. You're generally a better person than that.

Let me just say that I was puzzled by Patrick Mitford's vehement disagreement when it was brought to my attention, so I consulted with a friend who is one of the leading current authorities on Greek philosophy in general and on the pre-Socratics and Aristotle in particular . . . and he liked the article.

I'm inclined to trust his expertise on the matter more than yours and more than Mitford's.

So not only is your response snotty and irrelevant, it's misguided. A lesson to the wise: Don't rely on Patrick Mitford or whatever his name is.

I would be satisfied, at this juncture, with a list of six or seven authors who will be publishing books through the Maxwell Institute in 2013. I cannot understand why Bradford et al. would feel any hesitation to disclose such information at this point in time.

Slanderous falsehood. Other than that, though, a really fine analogy.

I often shake my head in wonder during these exchanges over the absence of indignation over the calumny that antagonists heap upon the Church of Jesus Christ and its leaders, past and present, and the faith of the Latter-day Saints, not to mention the slander that is inflicted upon some of the more prominent apologists.

Regarding the latter, i suspect they wouldn't be receiving so much abuse if they weren't so effective at what they do.

You'll be happy to know the list of upcoming MI books has already been leaked on the "other" board, so here you go:

"A Bible, They've Already Got a Bible" - Articles on biblical scholarship by LDS authors, with no mention of the Book of Mormon or any LDS-specific doctrines. The first in the Maxwell Institute's new "Ecumenical Outreach" series.

"Who Fired My Chicken Wings?" - Personnel management and business leadership strategies for the 21st century. Gerald Bradford

"Counting Cumorah" - New research suggesting possible alternate locations for the Hill Cumorah in Central America, including development of new metaphysical and intra-dimensional theories. Kurt Mann, DDS

"Color Me: 1,2,3 (Old Testament)" - A new coloring book with your favorite stories from the Old Testament. First in a series! Fun for the whole family! S. O. Smoot

"Mormon Doctrine, 1st Edition (Reprint with new introduction)"

Should be great year!
