Hebrew Book Of Mormon

I don't think it's been published yet. It looks like a personal effort? Very cool, though.

From English to Hebrew. Likely the Church already has done the same, or no? Not in the list of Book of Mormon languages?

Oh! And by the way...I'm damn infuriated that Dan Peterson, Bill Hamblin, Lou Midgley, et al have not created a non-Institute textbook for Book of Mormon studies.

Perhaps we should employ Brant Gardner, Volgadon, Maklelan and Grant Hardy.

Helen Schlie, the woman whose 1830 Book of Mormon was stolen in Mesa, AZ, had a copy when I visited her bookstore.

It is not the same one as the PDF file.

The Church published a very short run of portions of The Book of Mormon in Hebrew in 1981 http://www.amazon.com/Selections-Mormon-Hebrew-First-Edition/dp/B000WY00AE/ref=sr_1_43?ie=UTF8&qid=1360088729&sr=8-43&keywords=hebrew+book+of+mormon

(Lucky me found one at DI for $2 :) )

The RLDS Church has a full translation of The BOM in Hebrew and is a WHOLE lot cheaper. If you are looking for a hard copy of a Hebrew BOM, this may be the cheapest way of getting a hold of one.

I found this comment on Amazon enlightening:

The Book of Mormon in Hebrew was published by the Latter Day Saints in 1981. It was distributed free of charge around the world, especially in Israel and New York City. A few years later it was withdrew from public distribution and the remaining copies were kept by the LDS archives. The reasons given for this sudden change was due to errors in the translation. Others have reported that an agreement was made between the LDS and the Israeli government in order to keep their BYU extension program in Jerusalem. This agreement included to deprive Hebrew speaking Israelis from access to the Book of Mormon in their own language. This Hebrew edition is not a complete edition of the Book of Mormon rather a collection of selected passages from this great American literature work. Two other translations are currently available, one electronically (pdf) and the other in print. The printed edition was done by an Armenian Israeli and distributed by the Reorganized LDS in MO. Hopefully the LDS in Utah will reconsider it and will make the 1981 Hebrew edition available again to the public. No government should have the authority or power to censure the availability of any publication in the language(s) of its people. Regardless that we may or not agree with the content of the Book of Mormon, it is an American masterpiece of literature. Only literature that promotes senseless hatred and violence should be considered for censorship in any language or country.

One more thing...my birthday is coming up soon (Fall). I would very much love everyone from the board to pitch in and buy this for me.

ETA: Or this...its a little cheaper.

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I can certainly take either one of those out of petty cash! :D;) Are you going to be having a party, and will you be posting IRL contact information here to arrange it? (I'll look forward to coming! :))

As I remember, LeGrand Richards was interested in doing missionary work among the Israelites, and this edition of the BOM was part of that initiative. I believe there was special lessons or phamplets published as well. Today Israel is directly under the First Presidency, and contacts between members and citizens of Israel are strictly limited.

One interesting aspect of the restrictions on the BYU Cultural Center was the involvement of Ed Decker. I know off-hand details of his story, but perhaps someone can find a direct link. It was really strange -- he claimed that he was a Jew, tried to stop the construction of the Cultural Center because it would be a center for missionary work, etc. The lawer who was working with the church was killed in a car bomb.

But I don't trust my sources for this story.

Anyway, he is a very colorful character and is on a current project to drive a wedge between the church and Israel by claiming that we are financing the PLO and BYU has a very pro-Arab bias.

Decker is a bad and worthless joke. Thanks for the heads up on his antics.

Why'd you have to tell me that? How did John Hajicek (spelling?) get his hands on so many copies? I'm jealous of his library.

$1000 for selections? I guess, compared to the prices of the Books of Mormon I linked to, the price is somewhat accurate.

Thanks for the resource, Darren!

I've included their material in my Gospel Doctrines lessons from last year. It's great stuff they pulled together there. And I do believe Dr. Peterson and others were behind ctreating it.

Not to be blunt, but that is nonsense. Proselyting, yes, contacts, not at all.

Daniel Kelly Ogden published some of his journals for those years, that is where you can find the Decker incident.
