Tacenda Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 I was cleaning my closet during the Christmas break and found a book that belonged in my mother's family. I have several that my husband use to use when teaching in Young Men's. It is called "A Child's Life of Our Savior" by WM. A. Morton. It was used to help teachers teach their lessons. Anytime we can bring Jesus' life walk into the lesson, it's a good thing. 1
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 As has been done with the manuals of our prophets? This was a quote, my OP, from another board, that jumped out at me. I was wondering if this has happened anywhere in time. Maybe, maybe not? It's something I'd love to see happen and wish that if anyone on here has access to someone in the church's Curriculum Dept. they might find out or put forth the idea. Would anyone else like to see a manual like this? When don't they...but every 3 years running to be sure.
Tacenda Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 When I put the OP question to my husband just now, he said the same thing as someone did on this thread, that there isn't enough on Jesus life for a whole year of lessons. Then how come other faiths can do this year after year?
Damien the Leper Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 The church could use the Gospels specifically to teach about Jesus. Just studying those alone could take more than a year.

thesometimesaint Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Tacenda:One year in four is the study of the New Testament.
cinepro Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I disagree. We could spend months studying each of the Gospels extensively. We do "spend months studying each of the Gospels". When we study the New Testament for a year, the first six months deal with the gospels, with the rest of the New Testament being covered in the last six months. I suspect some would argue that they are not studied "extensively", but to the degree that that's true, I suspect it is a concious decision by the correlation committee and not seen as a problem in need of correcting.

Do you have an example of the curriculum they use? I suspect most other faiths also spend time in the Old Testament, just as we do.
Calm Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I suspect most other faiths also spend time in the Old Testament, just as we do.As well as the latter part of the NT where the teachings are of the apostles.

Damien the Leper Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I would be okay with a NT curriculum like this:The Gospels & Acts (1 year)Pauline Epistles & Hebrews (1 year)1, 2, 3 John, James, Jude, 1 & 2 Peter, & Revelation (1 year)
Calm Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 (edited) I would be okay with a NT curriculum like this:The Gospels & Acts (1 year)Pauline Epistles & Hebrews (1 year)1, 2, 3 John, James, Jude, 1 & 2 Peter, & Revelation (1 year)IOW, you are okay with apostles being given twice as much time as Jesus himself, including one whole year to an apostle who didn't learn the gospel at the feet of Jesus but through revelation and the instruction of others. For those of us who believe the apostles include latter day apostles as well as Nephite apostles, it makes sense to include them just as generously seeing as how they are teaching us the Word of God as well as Paul and the rest. Damien the Leper Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 No. That's not what I meant. What I described was a specific curriculum that divided the NT study into 3 portions. Alongside that, you could follow up with:1 Nephi-Alma (1 year)Helaman-Moroni (1 year; with 1-2 months focused on 3 Nephi)Section 1-Section 76 (1year)Section 77-Section 138 (1 year)PGP, Modern Prophets & ODs (1 year)As for the Hebrew Bible...anywhere from 3-5 years

Jesus is the one talking in the Doctrine and Covenants according to Mormons so when they are discussing the Doctrine and Covenants it is all about Jesus. And the Book of Mormon is about almost nothing but Jesus. 2
ERayR Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Didn't think of it that way. Good call. Maybe people would think that we only study JC once every several years. Thank you. I guess I just wanted to study His teachings in depth atleast 2 times a month, like we study the prophets, for one or two years. But see how this might seem silly because we should already have been studying Him.You must have a calling that keeps you from Gospel Doctrine class. We study the teachings of Jesus every week, from the Bible, Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price and D & C.
Tacenda Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 (edited) No I just barely got put in the Primary. So yes I too have been in GD class. It's just not the same thing as learning from the 4Gospels to me. But verse by verse and broken down would be nice. Edited January 7, 2013 by Tacenda

But verse by verse and broken down would be nice.Critical study is more fulfilling to me as opposed to only looking for life application and truths. I wish to dissect the scriptures rather than settle for a surface or few layers deep learning.
