Mitt Romney Is Going To Miss The "Cult" Lifestyle

Amazing!

Wonder what Rob Bowman has to say about that?

I resisted the temptation to ask but now that you have brought it up I'm sure something about Billy Graham not speaking for all Christians or some such thing. There is also the "I never called Mormonism a cult" defense.

Boy, I'm glad we're not a cult!

In general, cults differ from Christian churches first of all in what they believe. Cults always deny some part of what the Bible teaches (which is why some add other so-called "sacred" books to the Bible). Many deny the deity of Jesus, or believe His work on the cross wasn't sufficient to save us from our sins.

Cults also differ from Christian churches by the way they act. Cults often stress absolute and total obedience to their leader (instead of to Jesus), and threaten anyone who wants to leave the group by claiming they will be lost if they do.

Yeah, that totally doesn't describe Mormonism. <_<

I'm not exactly a fan of Mitt Romney but I think his results speak volumes for what he may be able to accomplish later...

"The move comes after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney met with Graham last week, with the aging evangelist pledging to do “all I can” to help the GOP nominee win the presidency."

"Romney went to see Graham and his son, the Rev. Franklin Graham, at the elderly evangelist’s mountaintop home in the mountains of western North Carolina. “Prayer is the most helpful thing you can do for me,” Romney told the 93-year-old Graham."

"The Republican candidate said that Franklin Graham, also an evangelical leader, had been helping his presidential bid. “What you’re planning, what your son has shown me, is going to be very, very helpful. And I appreciate that. It’s going to be terrific,” Romney said near the end of their 30-minute meeting."

"Romney adviser Mark De Moss later said Romney and Franklin Graham had been discussing how the younger Graham is doing everything he can “to encourage churches to encourage their people to get out and vote.”

"Romney’s embrace of Franklin Graham draws in an evangelical leader who has been criticized for his harsh views of Islam. The younger Graham has described Islam as evil and offensive and has said Muslims should know that Christ died for their sins."

"In 2010, the Army withdrew an invitation for Franklin Graham to speak at a Pentagon prayer service because of what officials called inappropriate comments about Islam. At the time of the Pentagon flap, Graham said of Muslims: “I find what they teach and what they preach and what’s on the Internet — I find that to be offensive, too.”

"Romney has faced some difficulty making inroads with evangelical voters, in part because some believe his Mormon faith means he is not a Christian. Earlier this year, the younger Graham expressed support for primary rival Rick Santorum, a Catholic. Pressed during an interview on MSNBC, Graham would not say that Romney was a Christian."

“He is a Mormon,” Franklin Graham said in February. “Most Christians would not recognize Mormonism … but he would be a good president if he won the nomination.”

...

"At the meeting, Romney and Graham discussed religious freedom and religious persecution, Romney adviser Mark DeMoss said. DeMoss, who sat in on the meeting, said they also discussed the growth of Graham’s ministry in China, Sudan and North Korea. Graham also mentioned Romney’s father, George, whom the elder Graham considered a friend."

"Romney told Graham the story of how his father died. “He was on the treadmill one morning at age 88 and he’s jogging on the treadmill and his irregular heartbeat caused him to faint and there was no one there to revive him and so he passed away,” Romney said."

Does this mean the blood sacrifice is off for next Sunday?

why would it be?

Where, and what time, and why didn't I get the memo?

No wonder we lost cult status. We can't even organize a decent gathering. Check your secret Mormon message system people!!!

Why don't we just fess up and admit it's in that tunnel under the atlantic we built for all the European mormons once Jackson temple is built.

The wonderful short-term benefit of this election for Mormonism in America is the number of strongly Republican religious figureheads coming out and saying Mormons aren't too bad after all. I guess the idea of a Democrat in the White House is more stomach-turning than a Mormon.

I do wonder about what happens next. Will they retract their statements about the church after the election, or have Mitt's mormon ambassadors really changed their views on us for good?

On the other hand, Republican presidents tend to be considerably less popular outside of USA and tend to be painted in quite a negative light (especially in Europe). I worry that 'the Mormon President' could be as pilloried and ridiculed as Dubya was for 8 years. It could serve to make the church less appealing rather than help it grow.

Not much to celebrate....looks only temporary

"Ken Barun, the association’s chief of staff, told The Observer in a statement. “We removed the information from the website because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign.”

Read the D&C, it is an ice bridge not a tunnel.

An ice bridge??!!!!

Why am I working for NASA then and secretly building this temporal/space dimensional warping vehicle then? It's almost done. We still have a few bugs to work out, like what are we going to do with the neutronic subspace discriminating disperser when we enter into the eighth dimension. We keep running into people in the middle of the mountain.

How are we going to get those saints from the City of Enoch back to Missouri anyway? That's a might big ice bridge from Planet 9.

Whoa! Everybody slow down! Urroner started off mistaken and everyone is following behind way to easily. Kudos to DavidB for spotting the reality of the matter.

Urroner your actual OP was correct but the title is WAY off. As your link states, "Billy Graham's Evangelical Group Removes Mormonism From Cult List", but this is vastly different than your title, "Billy Graham Declares Mormon Church Is Not A Cult". Removing Mormonism from the Cult List is NOT the same as saying that Mormonism is NOT a cult.

They made clear their reasoning in the same quote that DavidB posted:

“We removed the information from the website because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign.”

This clearly states that they removed the statement of Mormonism as a cult since the term "cult" has become a political tool. The strong implication is that, once the word is no longer being used as a political device, it will be reinstated - Mormonism will be added back onto their listing of cults.

There is nothing here that indicates that, by the theological definition of "cult", Billy Graham or his organization ACTUALLY BELIEVES that Mormonism is not one.

The real question, regarding Graham, is whether they will return Mormonism to the list right after the election or, if Romney wins and they want to continue to support his presidency, not return it until after his presidency. I'm pretty sure it's going to be one or the other. There's nothing here that says they believe that Mormonism is not a cullt.

I had to point this out to an LDS on facebook after this article was posted there. The propensity of LDS to see more here than there obviously is is... interesting.

Also, it is important to realize that Graham et al. are NOT saying that Mormonism is not a cult because, when they do return it to their listing of cults, we don't need sincere outrage of Graham et al.'s lack of integrity, when it is based on a false reading of this article and action.

NOTE: "cult" meaning "not believing like us" is not a bad thing. It is correct, and should be. It is a relative term. It has to do with group identity/differentiation. CoJCoLDS LDS do the same thing with polygamist LDS (or mormons) and other non-CoJCoLDS mormons, they just don't use the word "cult", but they do claim that they are not LDS or even mormons. So all the snide remarks about the word "cult" doesn't really help anything.

Oh, come on. "not believing like us"? Please post right here, right now, for all to see, that Judaism is a cult. After all, they don't believe like you. I suspect you won't, because you know full well that people use cult in a far more negative, even menacing sense.

My mistake, not an ice bridge....see D&C 133:26-27 concerning people of the north countries - which i think means Europe.

We didn't build it silly! We just bought if from the Catholics. They needed the money. They built it when Jack Kennedy was shuttling back and forth to see the Pope after he got elected. But they had a falling out and the Pope had him knocked off. So the Catholics didn't need it any more, and we bought it- it actually connects to the vaults in Utah now.

Cheesh! Don't you know your history?
