Halconero - An Introduction

Hey everyone and thank you for the welcome to the forum.

I'm halconero. I recently returned from serving in the Phoenix Arizona area, spanish speaking about 4 months ago. I'm from Canada, and will be going out east to the Toronto area come September for school.

I came to this board over the other forums focused on Jesus Christ, the Church and the Gospel because I found after lurking here the topics are more centered on the doctrine and culture surrounding the aforementioned topics.

I have a great love for all these things, and learning more about them, as well as discussing them with others. I hope I can help contribute to the board here.

Have you met Duncan on here yet? He's Canadian and I thought he was from somewhere near Toronto, (maybe, if i'm remembering right).

I am also Canadian, if Toronto is east for you i'm guessing Alberta? I am from where they got a new NHL team if that helps you figure out where I am from

There's also Freedom (obvious by his avatar) and Hamba Tuban and I am spacing on one other Canadian poster......

And then there's me who thinks of where I live now as the home away from the home that Calgary, Canada was for 13 years (longest I've ever lived in one place and I felt like I belonged the moment I got off the plane in July when we went to check it out and everyone was complaining about a heat wave and I was in long sleeves and pants and 8 months pregnant and feeling chilly, lol). Hopefully our retirement dollars will build up enough up there that we'll be able to manage a split life between here and there when the time comes because that would be my dream existence, best of all worlds.

Blackstrap is another Canadian, Albertan, of course. (he was the one I was thinking of)

Greg Smith, who posts very rarely is Albertan as well.

Unless I am totally losing it, Hamba lives back east.

A nonLDS poster who shows up occasionally is orion88.

Another one who posted back awhile but apparently still lurks is nettie.

There may be more but I don't want to do more searching.

PS: I am pretty sure I am right on Hamba. I remember him talking about it way back when he was telling us about how he was working with his young men, but those threads didn't not get brought over with the upgrades unfortunately.

add-on: okay, now I am not so certain, looked at some of his posts on nauvoo.com and he was definitely not living in Canada as of 2011 (in January he reported 38 degrees centigrade/101 Farenheit). Maybe he was just talking about a trip he made to Ontario once upon a time.

A little further west in British Columbia, though I went to school in Lethbridge, AB before I left for Phoenix

Manitoba eh? How are those summer mosquitoes treating you?

I think the weirdest adjustment moving to Toronto was finding out that in a city of 6.5 million there are only 2 YSA wards. In the west side of Phoenix alone (where I served) there are 8 YSA wards incorporated as a stake. Then in Lethbridge there are 8 YSA wards in a city of only 80,000.

Except a trip to Honduras and Mexico it will be the first time further east than Alberta...even Phoenix lies within the same time zone I'm in living in British Columbia.

No skeeters just yet! a bit windy, ocassional rain though but not anything bad. thank heavens! My Sis and her family live in Salmon Arm, BC. yeah the Church outside fo Alberta is different! there are 47? stakes in Canada with like 20 in Alberta so 27 outside but not nealry as concentrated as in Alberta, with both positive and negatives of having all of them in one province

Yeah I know Elder Whitlock! We served in the same ward together, Monte Vista, for a while. We were kind of hoping he'd the first missionary to go all the way just on a bike...but....he got a car in the last two transfers.

Tell him to translate Halconero and he'll figure out who this is.

Phenomenal missionary, unfortunate (or extremely fortunate/hilarious?) that he went home just having cactus needles taken out of his arm.

When we went to Russia, my husband's first girlfriend/crush (I don't know if she felt the same way about him when they were young) was the RS President.

OK, Halconero, since you're a Spanish-speaking Canadian, you'll like this story (I think :B)). I had occasion to go to the Stake Center a few months ago when the High Council and our Bishopric were all in attendance at a meeting. I was seated outside the High Council room reading my Spanish Book of Mormon softly outloud to myself to practice my (alas, wholly inadequate ) Spanish. Our ward's High Council rep came and sat down beside me. I didn't realize he speaks Spanish (or that he served a Spanish-speaking mission) until he complimented me, in Spanish, on my pronunciation. As we left the building, we were still chatting a bit in Spanish. My ward's second counselor commented that it always makes him nervous when people around him start speaking a language he doesn't know. It' makes him think people are talking about him. I responded, "Don't worry, Brother G. It's no different than when you start speaking Canadian around us Americans ..."

I swear "eh" slips out of my mouth much more often than it did when I lived up in Canada and it is all unconscious too (my husband does it on purpose with a Newfie accent too ).
