inquiringmind Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Is there a Church publication called "The Doctrines of Brigham Young"?I've seen several quotes from Brigham followed by "DBY, pages x-y," and I'm assuming "DBY" stands for doctrines of Brigham Young.Does anyone know anything about this publication?

splendidsun Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 The Discourses of Brigham Young, was drawn primary from Journal of Discourses, and significantly edited by Widtsoe. It is basically a compilation of excerpts organized topically, so as to strip any context.

The JoD is problematic, but it generally has complete sermon reports, sermon dates, sermon reporters, and sermon locations included. That is at least a start. Excerpted paragraphs from sermons spanning thirty years mashed together in single chapters isn't the best approach to the discourses of anyone.

Anyone read it?I've read a few of the essays in that book. I particularly liked Ronald Esplin's "Conversion and Transformation: Brigham Young's New York Roots and the Search for Bible Religion."Brigham Young's conversion story is as fascinating as any. He read the Book of Mormon shortly after it was published but found it "something he could not fully comprehend, either to embrace or discard." (I can relate.) After he had pondered it for more than a year, he concluded that "there was something in Mormonism"—but still he hesitated. Finally, after investigating Mormonism for two full years, he was baptized in April 1832:"'I could not more honestly and earnestly have prepared myself to go into eternity than I did to come into this Church,' he later affirmed. Yet it was finally the plain testimony of a simple elder that firmly launched Brigham Young into Mormonism. His own 'judgment, natural endowments, and education' bowed to the direct word of a man without eloquence who could only say 'I know.''The Holy Ghost proceeding from that individual illuminated my understanding, and light, glory, and immortality were before me. I was encircled by them, filled by them, and I knew for myself that the testimony of the man was true.'...The experience swept away his doubts and planted his feet in new directions. Thereafter he could say that when he encountered the Restoration, 'I fathomed it as far as I could and then I embraced it for all the day long'" (Esplin, "Conversion and Transformation," 39).
Duncan Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I read the Discourses of Brigham Young before my mission and it was a good read although now I remember nothing except for this and I love it!"Truth is my text, the Gospel of salvation my subject, and the world my circuit" (DBY, 322).
Thinking Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 A more appropriate title for the book would be Excerpts From the Discourses of Brigham Young.
