Buzzard Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Okay, I know this would never happen, but what if, one sunny morning, the First Presidency held a news conference, announced that JS just made it all up, and that the church would be dissolved, all it's property sold and the proceed given to charity (sorry, no tithing refunds), it's just going away. As a pure flight of fancy, what would be your plan B?-Join the ___________ church.-Be so shell shocked you would become an athiest.-Figure there's a God out there somewhere, but Sundays just opened up for some fishing/football/family time. (Probably my response)-Start a personal search for whatever new answer might be out there.-Start your own religion, figuring to collect on both some former LDS and maybe their tithing.-Or ???????? (You fill in the blank)Let's reiterate that this is not going to happen, and my testimony of the church is not crumbling nor trembling. It's just a Friday afternoon, and I thought a little bemused musings would'nt do any harm....
altersteve Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Probably a combination of the third and fourth options for me. And I'd still be a Christian, but I wouldn't associate myself with any particular denomination.

The Twelve would then appoint a new President of the Church. These moves would be swift, if not painless, and the Church would continue to function as before.

Let's not turn this exersize in fantasy into a real doctrinal fight. I guess I could alter the scenario to include the 12 at the news conference...
Robert F. Smith Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Alright, I get your point. Let's not turn this exersize in fantasy into a real doctrinal fight. I guess I could alter the scenario to include the 12 at the news conference...Sorry to rain on your parade, but . . .As Richard Bushman likes to point out, this is a Church of councils. There is a council for everything, no matter the scenario. It has nothing to do with doctrine, but rather with Church government -- a bureaucratic exercise, if you will. There is a certain amount of inertia in any organization, and with the LDS Church the momentum of a major freight train. Get the picture?

What they choose to do/say or not do/say has no bearing on my testimony of what is true. Now, if you were to have a hypothetical of Jesus Himself appearing and saying it was a total scam, then I might actually have to think about this.
The Nehor Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 My reaction:Okay God, most of your practical jokes have been funny. This one, not so much. So who really has the truth? 2
thesometimesaint Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Not Atheist, but probably a serious Agnostic.

blackstrap Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 If this was done on April 1 ,just before GC...... quite the gag.

I'd laugh, and Jesus would laugh with me. The gods have a wicked sense of humor, but I'd be glad that it was just a joke, and when we finished laughing and embracing, we'd get down to the business of eternity.
Storm Rider Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 I really hate these kind of impossibilities posed as questions. My testimony is not built on the leadership of the Church, if it were I would have left long ago. My testimony is built on the gospel of Jesus Christ. As far as how I live my life; nothing would change in my day-to-day life. 1

There is a certain amount of inertia in any organization, and with the LDS Church the momentum of a major freight train. Get the picture? At lunch the other day, the subject of the British Monarchy came up, and we were discussing if there would be any way to disband the monarchy; how could that even happen? Granted, none of us knew much about the system, but we agreed that if the time came for the crown to go to Prince William and he had decided it was time to end the monarchy and said that instead of becoming king there would no longer be a king or queen and the "royal family" was being retired, there is probably a system in place that would sidestep William (declare him unfit or something) and find the next willing heir to take the throne. Meaning, the "inertia" of the royal family is greater than the power of individual members of the family. That seems to be what you are saying about the Church, and I would agree. Somehow, someway, there would be enough believing leaders to excommunicate the apostates and continue the Church. And even though it's hypothetical, I don't think it's even hypothetically possible for more than a couple apostles to lose their testimonies all at once. It would take some form of solid evidence that would likely decimate the general Church membership as well. And I can't imagine any evidence coming to light that is worse than the Joseph Smith papyri, and we seem to be doing fine.

Anti-NOMunistJackMormon Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 I think it would pan out much like after the death of Joseph Smith. I frankly dont' see this EVER happening. It wouldn't effect my belief in God and Christ at all.
