I support these kinds of appeals. Those in Federal agencies often have dull jobs and getting this kind of comedy sent their way harms no one and undoubtedly brings some smiles to the office. Finally the crackpots of this nation are constructively contributing to the happiness of this nation. God bless them for it.

Yeah- but then they won't need those frugal, spartan, boring outings to Vegas to help keep up their spirits.

Perhaps.  But with crackpots on both sides of the equation, the net effect is zero.

Pity that the deficit is not.

@smac97: As someone else suggested - Are you even a tithe payer? If you are and are worried about it, stop paying. Otherwise...I think others feel satisfied that the money is being used appropriately would not be donating themselves. As others have suggested, bugets for each year for individual wards for Young Men, Young Women, Primary, etc are followed very closely. Also, new temples, new churches...that wouldn't happen if the money was squandered. Welfare program, food storage....that wouldn't be working either.

I read an article this morning about the church leading a project in Ethiopia to bring water to drought stricken villages

Posted (edited)

The Church has had its Clean Water project since 2002.

Since 2002 the projects have provided more than four million people in 50 countries with access to clean water.

(this was from 2008)

Here's some more: http://www.lds.org/l...ater+project%22

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more than 400 people are digging a 30-kilometer trench and laying pipe to create a gravity-fed water system. The four-year project will benefit an estimated 160,000 people, making it the largest clean water project the Church has funded.
In July 2008 in the neighboring district of Mwingi, the Church, with help from the local residents, built 30 wells that serve 56,000 people. Around the same time, 20 wells in Masinga, Kenya, were also completed, serving 32,000 people. Seven other projects in the country are in process.

Also:

More than 27,000 residents in mountain villages around Ampel and Boyolali, Indonesia, now enjoy the benefits of clean water as a result of a project carried out by LDS Charities with the help of hundreds of volunteer villagers.

A celebration for the completion of the major construction efforts was held with local government leaders, Church leaders, and about 500 villagers in attendance.

I'd rather not discuss my status as a tithe payer.

I don't agree with the petition, BTW.

Thanks,
