Deborah Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Just tell them to sack the news crew and use the money to produce more Dr. Who episodes.I second that! 2
Stargazer Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I saw the programme and was astounded. It was supposed to be about Romney but was a thinly veiled attempt to have a go at the Mormon Church. For the first time in my life I have posted a complaint to the BBC. In fact I posted 2 complaints and await a reply. It was pure tabloid journalism. If this is what the BBC has come to I don't believe they are worthy of the licence fee.As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I lived in Gloucestershire 1969-71, and during that time the Beeb broadcast a very simiilar documentary, and at that time they also went all the way to SLC to interview GA's (I think Harold B. Lee at that time) as well as a Black Panther leader who was in town. They haven't been worth the licence fee for a loooonnng time, then.

Log Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 So long as the thread is about The Mormon Candidate, or any other news item tangentially related to Romney, we may sing his political praises as Stargazer has done? I have no doubt that, should I open a thread and title it The Spirit of Liberty, and preach about how Ron Paul is and always has been unflinchingly faithful to, and perfectly consistent with, the principles of liberty and the Constitution, it would be locked about as fast as my post about how women entering the workforce actively damages children. Maybe even faster. There are people who oppose the potential Presidency of Romney based on factors other than his religion. Please stop stumping for him. 1

Log Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Ah, but you see, the principles of liberty and the Constitution have particular importance for Mormonism, which, as a Mormon, I rather would have thought you knew.In any event. 1
Vex Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Zak, don't make me utter the "challenge accepted" and attempt such things. Out of all the candidates currently attempting to run for office I find that Ron Paul has more in common with Church than Mitt does. I say this because he fully enables/supports us--and the states--to choose and practice our agency without a nanny-state type feel. Where would we be if God was an equivalent to a 'helicopter parent' and didn't allow the fall to occur? 2

David T Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Can we please keep the conversation geared to the Mormonism content in here? As much as its intended to focus on Mitt, the Doc actually says more about Mormonism than Mitt. I find the Elder Holland parts, of particular interest.
Mark Beesley Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 As a whole, the piece was fair and balanced, completely worthy of being aired on Faux News . . . I did learn something that I didn't know, was not curious about, and don't really care about now that I know it. There is a Strengthening Members Committee originally conceived to combat predatory practices of polygamist groups. Ok. Next.

Calm Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 (edited) I am not Hestia. I am not a mod on this board, nor have I ever been.I would think long term discouragement by the suspension of posters is effective in cutting down the frequency of occurrence, at least from what I've seen going on through the years I've posted. Please stop stumping for him.I myself am surprised at my attitude. Ever since Romney announced his candidacy I have been looking at him with a very suspicious eye. This changed suddenly, and I apologize for giving voice to my newly-converted stance.
sjdawg Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I appreciated the youtube videos with Elder Holland if for no other reason than to see how an apostle handles being asked harder questions. Some of the answers might not have been exactly what we would have hoped for, but Elder Holland was never defensive and I still have a great deal of respect for him.I thought he was quite defensive at times. All a matter of interpretation I suppose.
Sky Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I thought he was quite defensive at times. All a matter of interpretation I suppose.Considering that Holland was in a "lion's den" situation, I thought he did really well. I'm not sure how else he could have answered those questions.

Calm Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 You should compare his performance during the question and answers at Harvard. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/harvard-hosts-mormon-apostle
aranyborju Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I was disappointed that Mr. Purdy, the PR director chose to lie about the Strengthening Church Membership Committee, and then had to backtrack. He was being dishonest.I was also disappointed at how utterly ridiculous some of the allegations against the church were, i.e.: "Mitt tried to take away my baby, and told me to give it to the church," and "that night I noticed pagan symbols on my undergarments." Also, standing in front of the Boston temple and claiming that Mitt led a congregation of over 4,000 members in that very building speaks to how little the interviewer bothered to learn about church hierarchy and customs.

noel00 Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I notice Holland did not have a computer on his desk. I wonder how much he surfs the net,, especially viewing this board and the other which you call the "trailerpark".Questions I would have liked his to have asked1. Do you think there is plausible evidence to support the historicity of the Book of Mormon other than the spiritual witness?2. The BOA papyri were shown to have nothing to do with Abraham, Do you think these are still lost or did the currnently available papyri act as a catalyst for the content of the BOA?3. The first account of Jospeth Smith's vision, only mentions Jesus, wheras the official account mentions revivals, members of the family joining the Presbyterian church, the visit of God the Father and Jesus. How come Joseph's memory improved with age? You can have "too sacred" to mention or "made up". I assume you accept the first explanation.

The BOA papyri were shown to have nothing to do with Abraham, Do you think these are still lost or did the currnently available papyri act as a catalyst for the content of the BOA?The bulk of the papyri are still missing, but that does exclude the possibility that they were a catalyst to Joseph.3. I assume you accept the first explanation. The account of Saul on his trip to Damascus has three different tellings, all three were written long after the actual events. Did Sauls memory get better? Calm Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 especially viewing this board and the other which you call the "trailerpark".I highly doubt he's spent any significant time, if any time viewing either.
DBMormon Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 the public affairs guy didn't say it didn't exist, only that he was not aware of what they did...he was obviously caught off guard and didn't know how to answer. Elder Holland was also caught off guard but should have right away said Mitt took the throat slitting oath. I can only imagine what a non member evangelical was thinking watching this!!!! I am a bishop and it would never cross my mind to tell someone they will be excommunicated if they do not give up their child, so I find that hard to swallow
noel00 Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I noticed when it comes to the historicity of the FV even Bushman concedes that Smith might have got it wrong about the timing of Lucy Smiths joining the Presbyterian church (RSR p.570 fn 30). The 1820 timing of the revival is supported two camp meetings wheras the 1823-24 date is supported by Cowdery (M& A), Walters (see Dialogue, Spring, 1969) where he engages Bushman in a roundtable. On the BOA, was that "wing" really a hand or the wing of another bird. Magnify the picture and you can see two dots similiar to that of the bird above. If so the other hand of the person on the couch was holding his penis. This scene would be similiar to others. The glue in the gaps I read once has no fibre specks.
