Duncan Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 While waiting for a NHL game to start I am watching the Truman Madsen DVD on youtube about Joseph Smith. He says that Hyrum Smith attended Dartmouth College in his teens and this may have gotten Dr. Nathan Smith of the Medical College to come to attend to young Joseph Smith and his bum leg. I have never heard of Hyrum Smith going to college, he would have only been 12 when this happened. What do you make of this?

We have a University here that has a High School portion to it called the Collegiate which isn't like being in University but it's owned and on the same campus

Colleges were, until the mid-XIX, more like what we'd consider high schools today (although, being private schools, they did far more academically). The students were, by-and-large, in their mid-to-late teens, often younger, although sometimes older. It was entirely possible that Hyrum attended Dartmouth, or one if its affiliated schools for the less-well-off.A man was a man at age 15 or so, a woman was a woman when she married at age ~14 (or later). At about the age of twelve, Nathaniel Bowditch expected (or merely hoped) to go to Harvard, but was, instead, apprenticed to a ship's chandler.
