kolipoki09
Breaking:LDS scholar Matthew B. Brown (who posted here under the username Helorum) passed away today [Wednesday, Oct. 5]. He will be greatly missed. His wife has been very positive throughout the nearly 2 weeks he was in the ICU, but they did not have insurance and now has a stack of medical bills. An account has been set up to accept donations for his wife on the FAIR website.http://bookstore.fai...id_product=1261Even as someone who didn't see eye-to-eye with Matt with regard to apologetics, I'm saddened by this news. He has a long legacy and was a prolific contributor to FAIR and to a wider extent Mormon Studies. My regards to his family, friends, and loved ones. From Bryce Haymond at Temple Study:http://www.templestu...TempleStudy.com)Facebook Memorial Page:https://www.facebook.com/pages/Matthew-B-Brown-Memorial-Page/258111524230554?v=wall Link to comment

Ares
I pinned this so that the donation information will be at the top of the board. Please continue to be respectful of the family and their loss. Link to comment
oMtonic
The news of the incident a couple weeks ago was shocking enough as it is. It is to some degree hard to believe this has happened. The Gate of Heaven is probably the best book on the temple that I've read. It was the major reading component (amongst numerous others) of my temple preparation, which I carefully read. Matthew also helped me by providing me with interesting research information concerning Catholic monastic initiation rites that I made use of in a class presentation.Matt's contributions to LDS scholarship will be missed. He and his family will be in my prayers. Link to comment

Daniel Peterson
Very sad. For his family and friends, of course. But also for his audience and for Mormon scholarship, because probably ten or fifteen books won't be written now. It's a real loss. Link to comment
Scott Lloyd
I am shocked and saddened to hear of Matt's passing. I interacted with him at the FAIR Conferences and covered a couple of his presentations over the years. He was always very cordial and gracious to me personally and complimentary about my posts on this message board and its predecessor at the FAIR Web site.I admired his scholarship. Link to comment

William Schryver
My sincerest condolences to both Jaymie and the extended families. I'm sure this has been a very trying two weeks. I thought of Matt and Jaymie during Elder Cook's inspired general conference address. Matt was a very good friend, a faithful Saint, and an important contributor to the field of Mormon Studies. I will miss him very much until we meet again. Link to comment

Mudcat
Thanks for putting this up Kolipoki.I didn't know Matthew very well, our interaction on the forum was pretty limited. IIRC he was a stickler for detail. I think it's great that we can help the family through the link you have provided and would encourage anyone who can afford to make even the smallest gesture do so. I had a family member in my extended family have a similar situation occur with an uninsured spouse, it was very difficult for them financially and I imagine anything we can do for Matt's family would helpful.I certainly am sorry for his family and the absence they will experience. Thanks be to Christ that such absence is only temporary one! Link to comment
Pilgrim
It's not clear to me how to make a contribution. Can somebody clarify? I am baffled by the $10.00 tax message. Link to comment
William Schryver
It's not clear to me how to make a contribution. Can somebody clarify? I am baffled by the $10.00 tax message. The donation is being handled through the fairlds.org bookstore: Matthew Brown DonationAs I understand it, it is a $10.00 minimum donation. What you see reads $10.00 tax incl., which means "tax included". I'm sure there is no sales tax involved, but since they're doing the donation through the bookstore, there is a sales tax function that is being overridden. You can increase your donation by increasing the quantity field (2 = $20, 3 = $30, etc.). Link to comment
Zeta-Flux
I'm sorry to hear about Helorum passing. He was one of only a few posters who, when I saw his name, I would stop and read everything he wrote because I knew it would be instructive and posted in the spirit of kindness. As I live near Provo, is there a way I can make a donation in person rather than over the internet? Calm
Contact FAIR, someone there can put you in contact if it is okay with his wife. Link to comment
alter idem
I just saw this, Matthew will be missed, but his contributions remain. Until now I didn't realize he was Helorum but I did know him from a couple of his books which I've read. My thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace go out to his famiily. Link to comment
