What Do You Do For Fun?

I turned my hobby into a lifesyle. I love boating, messing about in boats. We moved aboard in 1999 and have only lived on land when forced to (helping others in the family). It's a tough life on a short budget but it's fun sometimes. I've been working too much on boats and need to go sailing. I think we'll leave Annapolis for So Cal in the next month or 2. I hope my Heavenly Father is with us on this endeavour because we can't do it without Him.

Isn't this strange? My mom had professional help with her genealogy, and everything led up to Jose Dario but that was it. I'll keep looking also... we have his date and place of birth, who he married, etc. You'd think a former governor of Calif, and one who was as prominent in the state during that period, would have some record of his line.

Maybe through military or church records...

GG

I looked at his military records, but again no luck.

Here's another.

Beretta 687 EELL Diamond Pigeon King Ranch .28 ga

Great little dove and quail gun. I grew up hunting on the King Ranch in South Texas, so when I found this gun, I had to get it. This will stay in the family for a loooong time.

I also love to write. I am currently writing a novel that I hope will be finished after my mission. A friend and I were working on it since junior high, and he sort of gave up on it but insisted that I continue with it by myself, which I have done on and off for several years now, making very little progress. But I have much of the story in my head and I have fleshed out the depth and complexities of the characters' personalities. It's a very cool thing to see your story and characters develop almost by themselves.

Interesting. As far as characters writing parts for themselves, I do recall the sci-fi author Roland Green writing something one time about the two books in the Janissairies series he helped Jerry Pournelle co-author, saying, I think only semi-jokingly, that the characters started to take on lives of their own and dictating their scenes in the book, and said that Pournelle and he were worried about arguing with them because they were too well armed! The characters of course being 20th century human mercenaries with modern weapons on a planet colonized by ancient and medieval humans. There at the behest of an alien race of drug dealers. Quite a story, actually.

Here's a montage of some of my hobbies.

  • I like to plink. The rifle is an Ishapore Enfield (Ishapore 2A1), made in India. I had to replace the original British pattern stocks because the wood was in terrible shape.
  • Ham Radio. The radio in the pic is a Yaesu FT-1900 2m band FM radio.
  • Windows Phone 7 app development. I have 11 apps in the app store so far. It's a "hobby" because I haven't made any money on it yet.

Intersting that you have an Enfield. A friend of mine does work from time to time in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He has a collection of original British 303 Enfield ammunition he has gathered over the years and gave me one of the cartridges. It was likely manufactured in the early 20th century.
