Nibley's "temple and the cosmos" (or something to that effect) is supposedly wonderful and very enlightening. I think Boyd K. Packer has one entitled "the Holy Temple" as well.

You can never go wrong with Nibley if you're looking for anything putting the endowment in a historical perspective. Nearly all 19 of his Collected Works deal with the temple in one aspect or another. Temple and Cosmos is great, as is The Message of the Joseph Smith Papyi.

A great collection of these resources is Temple Study: http://www.templestudy.com/

There are three very good documentary histories of the LDS temple offered here:

To a lesser extent, I would recommend David John Buerger's "The Mysteries of Godliness," which received a very honest review here: http://byustudies.byu.edu/showTitle.aspx?title=6392

Here's a good book from the Maxwell Institute as well: http://www.amazon.com/Temples-Ancient-World-Ritual-Symbolism/dp/087579811X

I too recommend "Temple and Cosmos" by Nibley (avail. in Deseret Bookstores)... love that book!!

Also, "House of Glory" by S. Michael Wilcox... and I'm just starting Truman Madsen's "The Temple."

But overall by far my favorite is Nibley's.

The Gate of Heaven: Insights on the Doctrines and Symbols of the Temple by Matthew Brown. Great book so far, he goes through temples throughout Judeo-Christian history, tying LDS temples to the ancient ones, as well as showing interesting parallels in the rituals of the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Of all the books that I want to buy that one is on the top of me list! I have wanted it for sometime now!

"Of all the books . . ."

That author's talk at this year's Expound Symposium will add to the material in that book.

The Expound Symposium for 2012 (Saturday, May 19) will add even more.
