I think it was an anti-Mormon movie made in 1922. But Dan thinks it is a docudrama made by Living Hope Ministries, SET in 1922. He argues that the production values are simply too high. Can anyone enlighten us?

Can anyone enlighten us?Well, there were movie ads for it back in the early 1920s -- but whether the film there depicted was the one now reproduced on DVD, I know not.If you'll go to the on-line theses & dissertations of the BYU Lee Library Digital Collections section, you'll find there a thesis (I think it was) on old anti-Mormon movies. It was based on true life stories that were first recounted in the premier Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet. Subsequently this movie won the Best Documentary Award from the American Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for 1922, as well as an award from the Mormon History Association.
alter idem Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 "Trapped by the Mormons" was playing at the Organ loft theatre here in Salt Lake last week. They show old silent movies with the accompaniament played on a fabulous antique organ. My daughters and their friend went to see it and loved it. Of course, when first made in 1922, it was a serious piece, designed to expose the nefarious plans of Mormon missionaries to trap innocent female converts, but to today's LDS, it's humorous. They had the DVD for sale at the Organ loft and I guess you can buy it online as well.This week at the theatre is "Phantom of the Opera" and after that "Nosferatu". Just in time for Halloween.

He gives a commentary on the old 1922 film on DVD as well as a commentary on the movie BRIGHAM YOUNG DVD. He frequently shows these films on campus. I haven't seen the new film yet, but the comment on production quality being too high for Living Hope Ministries is probably an accurate slam. A review of the 1922 film can be found here. It apparently was inspired by the vampire films of the era. "The Bram Stoker book was quite popular, so the image of the vampire was what we would call 'presold' at the time," D'Arc said. "Winifred used frequent allusions to vampires and werewolves in her books, and American missionaries came to be seen as foreigners with the mysterious power to take women as victims, just like vampires did."

I knew... got any boots for me Uncle Dale...I think Vincent Price was price-less as Joseph Smith... and Dean Jagger was a perfect Brigham... the courtroom scene where Brigham makes his speech was dramatic... When I was a young girl I went through various phases of reading... i.e., dog stories (Lad, A Dog; Lassie Come Home, etc.) then Nancy Drew... and then, Zane Grey westerns... He had an intense dislike for Mormons and his books always had some real derogatory scenes with Mormons... I remember going to my mom and asking why the Church didn't do something about him... Programmer Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Duhhh Bill.Any movie made in 1922 would have terrible sound, flickering light, and all sorts of cinamatographical signs marking it as an old movie. Unless someone ressurected an old camera and used it, or used some of my companies million dollar software + systems to do the special effects to make it look it look old, then I doubt it would be that old... but what do I know, I just live in a family of cinematographers and partly work in that industry. but, now I'm offended.... I used to live all this time in Utah Valley and no one invited me to movie night!!!

If I remember correctly it was a silent production filmed near what was Osmond Studios. But at time, the land was owned by Zebulon V. Grant.
