New Teotihuacan Linguistic Study (Hansen & Helmke)
Okrahomer replied to Pyreaux's topic in General Discussions
Has there been any reaction from Dr. Stubbs about this new Teotihuacan writing theory? I visited this area a few years ago with two colleagues -- one from Peru and one from Mexico. At one point, I lost track of the colleague from Peru. I asked my other colleague if he knew where the Peruvian had gone. He exclaimed: "An Incan has invaded the Aztec city!" -

I think that was Sister Uchtdorf sitting next to Sister Oaks…? When I saw that, I thought it was a sign Elder Uchtdorf would be in the First Presidency again. Wrong as usual.

You’ve expressed a lot of empathy here — something I’ve seen you do often. It’s one of the things I really appreciate about your posts. Empathy is such a Christlike quality; it reflects His way of seeing and caring for others. When we try to understand people’s hearts the way you do, we’re following His example of love and compassion. I learn from and am edified by your example.

You are right! Apologies: They live in Mapleton but the Ward is in Spanish Fork.

Here My son and his wife (a naturalized US citizen from Mexico) attend a Spanish-speaking ward in Mapleton, and they report a lot of anxiety in their very large ward.

I loved that story!

A "Quiet Shift Toward Doubters" the RNS & Tribune Reports

This is where I'm from (on the Oklahoma side), and I can confirm as well. My folks reported about the Tri-Stake Conference when the new Rogers Arkansas Stake was created and the young man called to be Stake President: "So impressed with this new young Stake President! The moment he opened his mouth, we got the feeling that he is probably destined for higher callings in the Church." Their impression has proven true over the years.

So impressed and inspired by Elder Johnson’s story of struggle between his testimony versus aspects of Church History. He is certainly a faith-filled man.
-
After hearing Elder Brown’s stirring sermon just now, I would not be surprised if he were called to be an apostle.
-
This would not surprise me at all. He and I were missionary companions in Germany years ago. His deep spirituality and exceptional talent were already clearly evident.

Colorado fined for fans’ bad behaviour at game against BYU
Okrahomer replied to Calm's topic in General Discussions
Not at all. I think it would be somewhat exceptional if we saw many students carrying anti-discrimination signs into a football game. In my estimation, the typical football stadium is populated with (1) a lot of people who love their team and love the sport -- so much so that they're willing to pay a LOT of money to attend; (2) people (like my wife) who only come, because they love me; and (3) students who come to support their university sports team. I think the situation you described earlier (a group of LGBTQ+ students and supporters starting a chant) is definitely possible -- though honestly, I don't think it is all that likely. -

Agreed. I think Deion Sanders (i.e., Coach Prime) pegged the entire episode correctly: These chants came right out of a mostly inebriated, young and dumb student section who thought it would be funny to use the "mother-of-all curse words". I love California Boy's point of view though. I appreciate when he shows us that there is usually another way to see a situation. -

Scapegoat or honest observation? If you had watched the pre-game TV broadcast, you would have seen coverage of CU-Boulder students who were already quite inebriated prior to kick-off. These kids were having a "great" time outside the stadium and were planning to continue having a great time inside the stadium -- there were no pro-LGBTQ+ rights signs, no rainbow flags nor any other sort of anti-discrimination symbols on display. -

Exactly. One BYU sports commentator noted that they were also chanting "F- BYU" which, in his opinion, is "allowable"; while the late-game "F- the Mormons" was not OK. -
A GiveSendGo campaign for the family of the Michigan shooter

I noticed several news article about this this morning -- here is one: https://nypost.com/2025/10/01/us-news/mormons-raise-180k-for-family-of-michigan-lds-church-shooter-thomas-sanford/ I just checked the GiveSendGo account: $197,000+ I also had a look at GoFundMe -- there are several fundraisers for LDS shooting victims there, including one for the 2 young physicians who were attending Church that day -- both with significant injuries. Another for a brother who was shot 3 times -- it all just breaks my heart. -
Shooting at church in Grand Blanc Michigan. Pray
Okrahomer replied to bsjkki's topic in General Discussions
It did not take long for more than $50,000 to be raised -- the goal is now $100,000. Some of the messages people are leaving are very wise. If the family is able to read through them all, I think they will feel very loved. -
Mormon church membership - who to count as members
Okrahomer replied to Notatbm's topic in General Discussions
It’s quite interesting to note challenges, similarities and differences in the approaches. fyi: I just had a look at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church policy. The SDA Church is another one that does not consider “activity” in their calculations of membership. Apparently, the SDA links membership to specific congregations, which is similar to Protestant and Jehovah’s Witness churches. -
Mormon church membership - who to count as members

FWIW -- I asked ChatGPT to compare/contrast membership policies across several religious organizations. The only issue I have with this is how ChatGPT links LDS membership to "the database" -- that seems a bit synthetic. I see the LDS policy as most similar to the Catholic and Orthodox approaches: -
