I'M A Mormon

Now that the ad campaign has been active for a few months now, I'm curious as to people's opinions of, not only its overall effectiveness, but whether you like/dislike the ads and/or the entire campaign itself.

I am on there, don't know if anyone has seen my profile or not but maybe it helps out I dunno! I don't have an opinion one way or the other about it

I don't dislike the ads -- it's kind of nice to see other LDS doing all kinds of interesting things. If they did an ad with me in there, it would be something like:

I come home from work after 8 hours working on a computer for the state government, and then spend another three or four hours on my own computer looking for real estate deals until my wife is wondering if she is married or not, and if so, to whom? I snore loudly in my sleep and sometimes my wife has to move to another room to get a little shuteye. I hate watching sports on TV (or anywhere else, for that matter), my back hurts, and my hair has gone almost all gray.

And I'm a Mormon.

I actually think there's a lot of people who would relate to that. Don't you?

Well, how would we know it was you? "Hi, I'm known as Duncan on Mormon Dialogue dot org!" :P

if anyone can get anything from that then they earned their paycheck. I recently left my job, single dad, have enough money to last for a few months so I am not worried, active in the Church, try to make other people laugh and not be so jammed up jelly tight and I am a Mormon!

Our local meetinghouses now have colorful banners next to the sign that say, "I'm a Mormon!" - I think it's a fantastic idea to merge the connection between "Mormons" and "Latter-day Saints" in people's minds. I think this is the key goal, as well as to 'normalize' us a bit in individual's minds. I think in this respect, it's doing quite well.

I think the “I’m a Mormon” ad campaign is a great idea. There are conversations happening constantly on the internet about the Church, and it only makes sense that the Church would want to be a part of it. There is a lot of negative information on the internet about the Church, and it is important to have a place where people can go for basic and accurate information about what we believe. How many people actually get baptized because of these ads I don’t know. But if it helps even a few people to better understand us, then it will have been worth it.

Thanks for sharing your profile, Lehi. And I’d like to apologize for sometimes being unkind towards you. I mean that. We have far more in common than not.

No problem. "Water off a duck's back" is one of my favorite sayings.

(That may be why I am brusk sometimes: what I'd say would not affect me were the tables turned, so no one else should be bothered either.)

Wow, interesting to see the real people. I think it goes to show that Mormons are regular people and not the Avatars we see here.

You know yours, and Duncan knows his, how do I find mine? I put one out there, but I have no idea how to find it again.

I'm just being stupid, I guess.

Edited to add: Ooops. I just figured it out!

I'm sure you're just as beautiful as your avatar. I don't look at all like mine, though.

Good. All this time I actually thought you were a telescope.

So what the heck does one do with a degree in "geography"?

Good question. A lot of people with backgrounds in Geography either teach it or go into Geographic Information Systems (think GPS). But I ended up with a job in payroll and accounting. I'm in a good place right now, but I want to eventually go back to school to get a certificate in accounting.

Don't forget there is an "Why I am an ex-Mormon" site in response to our "Why I am a Mormon " which is out there to counter our Testimonies and Faith along with those we share The True Gospel with.

I have not done my profile yet. In the middle of a job search I am not comfortable with my private life being broadcast to that degree. I will do one once I'm established in a new career.

However- my son had a friend comment to him that he noticed other religions imitating the "I'm a Mormon" campaign and found it curious. I guess that is a sincere form of flattery and evidence that someone thinks they are a good idea.

I saw a commercial for the Catholic Church about "coming home". I would imagine though that they have more inactives then we do, but maybe something like that could work in higher member areas
