I'M A Mormon

I have not done my profile yet. In the middle of a job search I am not comfortable with my private life being broadcast to that degree. I will do one once I'm established in a new career.

If it helps, you are not required to publish your last name. In fact, it is discouraged. They really do care about privacy.

I think the website idea is excellent as it provides a place for people to connect spiritually to others. Allowing people to network and share their beliefs to broad audience is great.

My only issue is he way I think the ads sometimes portray the level of diverse lifestyles within the church as if they are itypical or generally accepted within the church. A guy with long hair riding a Harley, or mormons like Brandon Flowers from The Killers (who is not endowed and definitely believes in a nuanced way of living his religion),

(http://mormon.org/brandon/) are great ways to show diversity, but unfortunately, these "types" of mormons are not exactly typical and their lifestyles are generally discouraged by church leaders and culture. Sure, they can still be active members, but most Mormon's with those type of dress standards, lifestyles, or nuanced beliefs aren't exactly the first in-line to be the next elder's quorum president or bishop. What you wear, listen to, say, or even believe, is generally something that is watched very closely in the wards I have been, and I think the ads somewhat falsley portray that we welcome all to bring and keep that diverse way of life within the church.

something I was intrigued by was some of these people on there that were like 30, Bishop of their ward. Volunteer Fire Sheriff on the weekend, M.D., 7 kids, loves travelling, scuba diving, racing cars, painting, speaks Latin, German, Spanish etc. Like who in the world are these people?! how come they don't live in my ward?

I'm sure you're just as beautiful as your avatar. I don't look at all like mine, though.

You don't? I'm shocked!

You must have been trying to deceive us all this time. Isn't that just like a Mormon?

Pahoran

Well, if you're going to have that many children, being a doctor is going to save a lot on doctor's bills...

Just my thought on the "I'm a Mormon" campaign.

In a way it's sort of neat.. lots' of bravado.. but in another way it has a "coming out of the closet" sort of feel.

I don't imagine this is the intent of those that present their view but at least on my part it was a superficial perception.

I saw a commercial for the Catholic Church about "coming home". I would imagine though that they have more inactives then we do, but maybe something like that could work in higher member areas

My husband and I saw a recent Catholic commercial that talked about being the "true church"…. we chuckled. Wonder where they got that?

hello

I want to ask

what make u mkormon, merit not in other religions ?

Yes, there is merit in other religions. A recent Prophet and President of the Church said, "We simply say to people of other Churches, bring all the good that you have, and let us see if we can add to it."

We believe that there is much truth in other religions, but that the fulness of the Gospel of Christ is found in his restored Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Don't forget there is an "Why I am an ex-Mormon" site in response to our "Why I am a Mormon " which is out there to counter our Testimonies and Faith along with those we share The True Gospel with.

Hello, it seems like English is not your mother tongue, but what I understand you to ask is, "What do Mormons find in their church that is not found in other religions?" This could take a great deal of time and it may be worth you visiting www.lds.org. Briefly, we find the same church that Jesus founded when he was on the earth. It is lead by a prophet and twelve apostles who stand as special witnesses that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. This Church has the authority to act in the name of God and this authority was returned to the earth in the same way it was first given: by the laying on of hands. The Book of Mormon serves as a second witness that Jesus is the Christ. God speaks to the world today through his prophets just as in olden days.

If you have specific questions, please feel free to ask them.

I think that is accurate. Many feel that LDS are weird people that have horns and a tail. These types of media allow for others to realize that LDS are normal people that have found something very special to them. It also serves as an invitation to come unto Christ and know his Church.

I've been on for several months now, in conjunction with the ad campaign in the Indianapolis area. I really like it. I've had some very good discussions regarding the Church because of it.

I was very touched by that commercial. It was positive and all about getting Catholics in name back into activity in their faith.

I think such commercials only enhance why religion is so important in our nation, I would encourage every church to do what we have done in order to create a strong bridge of understanding and a stronger connection to ethics.

The idea of a commercial or the idea about being a "true church"? I doubt either came from copying the LDS Church unless there are similarities that are directly tied to the LDS commercials (I don't believe LDS were the first to make use of commercials and we certainly weren't the first to claim being the "true Church").

Now, which is that Church? There are now three hundred and fifty different Protestant churches in existence, and almost every year one or two more are added. Besides this number, there is the Catholic Church.

Now, which of all these various churches is the one true Church of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for all claim to be the Church of Jesus?

But, my dear beloved people, it is evident no church can be the Church of Jesus except the one that was established by Jesus. And when did Jesus establish His Church? When? When He was here upon earth. And how long ago is it that Christ was upon earth? You know our Christian era dates from Him. He was born many centuries ago. That is an historical fact admitted by all. He lived on earth thirty-three years. That was about nineteen centuries before our time. That is the time Christ established His Church on earth. Any Church, that has not existed this long, is not the Church of Jesus Christ, but is the institution or invention of some man, but not of God, not of Christ.

Now, where is the Church and which is the Church that has existed this long? All history informs you, it is the Catholic Church. She, and she only, among all Christian denominations on the face of the earth, has existed so long. All history, bears testimony to this, not only Catholic history, but Pagan history, Jewish history and Protestant history, indirectly.

I've enjoyed the various comments that have been made so far. The links to posters profiles was also an unanticipated yet welcomed addition. It's fun to put faces to the faceless internet personalities.

I confess that when I opened the OP, I particularly had in mind the TV ads. Having just watched a couple the evening before I came away with some mixed feelings.

The ads often dupe me at first into thinking that they are a trailor for some up and coming movie or TV series. Shortly thereafter I realize it's a I'm a Mormon ad. I enjoy the messages that are presented, the moral and intrigue of people's lives. But I have to admit that for some reason I feel a little turned off (for lack of a better expression) to these neat little bios of people's lives to have to end with a what sounds to me as "...and what makes all this even more interesting is that I'm a Mormon". It feels like we are trying a little to hard. Personally I liked the previous LDS ads which depicted a short uplifting scene only followed by a display of the the church logo.

Is it the message that makes the people, (or by extention the church), or the people that make the message?

Posted

The people are definitely the message. Go to mormon.org and you can watch the "full version" of the portraits that appear in abbreviated form on television. They are inspiring.

I fear an ad made about me would have to include...

My church attendance is spotty...

My house is in disarray...

I curse too much...

I neglect my prayers and scripture reading...

I'm out of work...

I lack faith in Christ...

...and I'm a Mormon!
