The reason for swapping wives was supposedly because they felt that the United Order required it of them. I know a few descendants of the branch members and the general consensus of the descendants is that a few of the men just wanted to get other wives and so convinced the other men that it was required by the United Order. There isn't much about them online as it was a really small group. My grandfather joined The Church of the Firstborn and they claimed authority through BFJ who got it from John Taylor... 1
BCSpace Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 Just a thought and a question...it may be nothing. But do we have a copy or a way to view a marriage license for any of the women Joseph Smith was sealed to? Which sealings can be associated with a marriage license and which cannot? Family Search?

Don Bradley would likely know. You could also try and contact Brian Hales. https://josephsmithspolygamy.org/contact-laura-and-brian-hales/ 1

There aren't any marriage licenses of any of the polygamous marriages for Joseph Smith. All of the sealings were redone in the Nauvoo Temple and I believe the only way to view that is to have one of them be your direct ancestor. There have been people who were given access to the records for study and they published the records. https://archive.org/details/nauvoo-sealings-adoptions-and-anointings/page/n3/mode/2up?view=theater is a good resource to see what happened in the Nauvoo Temple. 2

You can see them at https://mormonpolygamydocuments.org/. It isn't the easiest thing to go through, but it has a ton of early documents, journals, etc. 3

I'd recommend reading Hales' 3 volume Joseph Smith's Polygamy: History and Theology. I found the first two volumes to be really good at going over what happened based on all the sources. The third volume is an attempt to explain how polygamy fit in Joseph's theology so it is interesting as well. Edited October 22, 2024 by webbles 1
InCognitus Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 There's also the book, Joseph Smith's Polygamy - Toward a Better Understanding, by Brian C. Hales and Laura H. Hales (Greg Kofford Books, 2015), which is a very condensed overview version (204 pages including the index) of the research of the Hales and Don Bradley. 1
