Does the LDS church do anything similar?

What ails you has names- covetousness and envy.

Oh please, Tacenda is nothing like that.  She wants other people to have food and shelter security like she has, the opposite of covetousness and envy.

That was a reply to Teancum, but I think what you said applies to him as well.

Lol, I so need to order that new glasses prescription…my bad, lol.  But I agree it applies to him as well.

A billion $ of humanitarian aid compared to the annual increase the the Church's massive wealth is a small sum.  Still I am happy to see it increase.  But ya know, SMAC says us evil apostate critics will never be satisfied so, meh.   As for your last comment, it's a personal attack and incorrect.  And a dumb statement.  You don't know me.  And labeling me as such simply is ad hominem. It also mean you are losing the argument.  But you keep defending your church, the one that claims to be Jesus's church, and the immoral accumulation of massive wealth while so many still suffer. And many of those are members that give their widow's mite to have to go into the large investment fund the church has.   So no covetousness nor envy. I helped the church create the fund through the hundreds of thousands of $ I gave. I do not expect that money back.  Nor do I covet having a few hundred billion invested. So you are clearly wrong and just stooping to personal insults. I have some to expect that of you.  But I wish I knew what I know now though because I would have ceased my contributions to a church more concerned about amassing wealth then relieving human suffering much sooner.

Maybe....but there is something off about being obsessed with the wealth and spending habits of others. He doesn't agree with the Church, he left, he no longer contributes so why the continuous focus over Church finances? Maybe a spirit of unforgiveness? Whatever it is, he needs to move on, staying stuck on your anger against others is not healthy.

But he isn’t from what I have seen over the years obsessed with the wealth and spending habits of others, which would be a possible signal of covetness (could also be anxiety over the possibility they were damaging themselves or others).  He is focused here on the behaviour of the Church and not anyone else and since this forum is focused on the behaviour of the Church, that should be hardly noteworthy.

Thanks Calm, that was kind of you.

Thanks for sharing, and also thanks @Bernard Gui for sharing his link. I'm very happy that the church is doing these things. I'm surely excited for more of it to come.

It is just the truth.  Even if I misread it, lol

Piggybacking on Tacenda’s thread as I didn’t want to start a new thread:

Quote

Volunteer on a regular basis, if possible. Serving consistently, rather than only during holidays when many others serve, is beneficial. It also allows you to develop personal relationships with those you serve. If serving regularly is not possible, be willing to contribute whatever you can. Even a little bit will help. Don’t try to make your involvement in community service a missionary opportunity. Your service alone will say much about you and your faith.

Just came across this in some research.  I have noticed several similar comments stressing focusing on volunteering for the sake of volunteering, not for an ulterior motive.  I think this is a very important counsel as it will lead to greater satisfaction in the service given and it stresses that helping is valuable in and of itself.  When everything was counseled to be looked at as a missionary opportunity, I think it diluted much of the positive aspects of the activity being subordinated to missionary work.

Nothing wrong in keeping eyes open for missionary opportunities.  There is however, imo, something wrong with only looking for one kind of opportunity in all things….it would be like focusing on school, making friends and having a large social network, even being fit and healthy and finding the perfect spouse all for the purpose of getting the prestigious job you dream of…what happens if you don’t get the job?  All that effort becomes meaningless when it could have been so fulfilling in the moment as well as potentially worthwhile in the future instead of being tied to only one potential future.  At times the counsel “every member a missionary” felt like “every member a missionary in every moment”.  I am thankful they have moved away from promoting doing missionary work in that way.
