Church Announces New Life Lessons for Youth

But what are they teaching?

It’s rather vague besides studying scripture.

The enriched seminary lessons will help students handle challenging life circumstances, fulfill their divine identity and potential, become self-reliant, develop healthy habits, succeed in school, pursue additional education, prepare for missionary service and make and keep covenants in the temple. This more comprehensive approach will better prepare youth to face the complexities of the modern world while staying grounded in scripture — ultimately leading students to deepen their conversion to Christ.

“By incorporating Life Preparation lessons in our seminary curriculum, we hope to unlock a spiritual reservoir unlike any we have seen before,” said Chad Webb, administrator of Seminaries and Institutes. “Our hope is to help prepare a generation of youth to know how to study the scriptures and be riveted to the teachings of living prophets — a generation of emotionally resilient youth who have the skills and capacity to succeed in school, become righteous fathers and mothers and lead in the Church and their communities.”

I found some more info. https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2024/1/30/24055436/church-announces-new-seminary-life-preparation-lessons

Some quotes from the article:

It is recommended, he said, that these new thematic lessons to seminary curriculum be implemented one to two times each week, developed from topics such as mission, temple and educational preparation; scripture study skills; emotional resilience; life skills; and teachings of latter-day prophets.

A few years ago, the Church tested a new course in seminary — a revised version of the institute course “Scripture Study Fundamentals.”

“After one semester, students in those classes were significantly ahead of their peers in their ability to have meaningful personal scripture study and to participate in classroom discussions,” Webb related.

At the same time, a program called Succeed in School was having great success helping students be more prepared for future educational opportunities. Seminary administrators also began discussions with the Missionary Department about what more seminary could do to help prepare future missionaries. Other discussions were taking place with the Temple Department about helping first-time temple attenders have a meaningful temple experience and with the Welfare and Self-Reliance Department about helping increase emotional resilience.

And then they go into more detail in a broadcast from Jan 26. It can be watched here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/broadcasts/miscellaneous-events/2024/01/full-session?lang=eng

This looks interesting and much needed. Looks like only some areas in the US for this year and then a world wide rollout for 2025. I have two kids that will be in Seminary next year.

Seems short on details. What does this really mean:

The addition will help students draw on the power of Jesus Christ in all aspects of life.....

Maybe they took a poll.

"Hey Parents, tell me your woes!"

"Our kids don't know how to handle hard life stuff, they don't take the future seriously (much less eternity), they're completely useless on their own, they do all sorts of dumb stuff that hurts them, they're struggling in school, they get mad whenever I bring up college or trade school, they're not interested in missions, or service, or temples, they're so afraid of the outside world they're staying home into their 2nd quarter-century, and they've got one foot out of the church because they don't even believe in Jesus."

"Ok, how about we:"

Honestly, it sounds like they're addressing stuff I keep hearing about in news and socially.  Maybe it'll do some good.

It is never easy to raise children.  It is harder now than when  mine were young.  But it is not impossible nor as hard as you illustrate above. Parents need to act like parents. It is nice if organizations outside of their home offer support. But I cannot imagine any parent worth their salt approach parenting in such a whiny wimpy weak sniveling way.

Not like back in the good old days of yore when our parents were saying we were all a bunch of useless layabouts.
