Any new? A quick scan says it is based on the same stuff, but perhaps not so emotionally written.
JustAnAustralian Posted December 19, 2023 Author Posted December 19, 2023 (edited) Nothing particularly new that I saw. Each lawsuit just seems to repeat all the previous stuff plus adding in what ever news article has come out since the last one. Like the Huntsman lawsuit, it seems to rely on earnings on invested tithing surplus both tithing. Edited December 19, 2023 by JustAnAustralian 1

rpn Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 (edited) The class action one is new (and likely makes this really lucrative for the lawyers should it stand and they win). (It also potentially helps the church because if class action status is granted, it forces members of the class to identify themselves or opt themselves out and that potentially means that people couldn't sue later. Here it comes......I wonder if it will be advertised one day like the lawyers going after a certain drug company.
JustAnAustralian Posted January 1, 2024 Author Posted January 1, 2024 Looks like part of it's an organised effort. More class actions in other states https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/68121523/brawner-v-corporation-of-the-president-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ-of/ (Tennessee) https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/68110148/risdon-v-corporation-of-the-president-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ-of/ (Washington) Identical wording in multiple claims (see para 28 onwards) 3
california boy Posted January 2, 2024 Posted January 2, 2024 Maybe it is an effort on someone's part to get the Church to be more transparent on its finances. I am guessing these law suites will require some kind of financial documentation in order to defend themselves????

It's all the same basic arguments Huntsman used, but with the SEC order tacked on. So my guess is that yes, like Huntsman, they want to get back at the church and get access to documents.
JustAnAustralian Posted January 19, 2024 Author Posted January 19, 2024 Long (original post) is now trying to get them all consolidated and transferred to California https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/68151300/in-re-the-church-of-jesus-christ-of-latter-day-saints-tithing-litigation/ My guess is that he's worked out that mixed outcomes on identical claims could lead to it ending up with the underlying questions being decided by SCOTUS (probably against him given its current make up). 1
