Sorry, lost track of the conversation. Was responding more to this quote below rather than the intersex topic. My apologies. I believe being dismissive of intersex as “rare” is inappropriate in terms of policy making, etc given the actual rate. I am currently staying out of the transgender discussion as not willing to do research right now to make sure my ideas are consistent with the science. “A guy in my freshman ward committed suicide a couple of years later because of his despair at being gay. In and out of the church, we should do better in teaching our children that being LGBTQ is not the end of the world. People who feel loved and accepted tend to be less likely to attempt suicide.” 1

For all the folks claiming that the LDS position on homosexuality causes suicide need to prove that suicide rates among gay LDS are higher than non-LDS. Or perhaps even just compare religious adherents. Unless and until someone can show that the LDS Church has a statistically significantly higher rate than other groups, GTFO with your blackmail. Without this data there is absolutely zero basis to conclude the LDS Church influences -- let alone causes -- suicide. You are seriously complaining that the suicidal are killing themselves because it is making other people feel bad? I have done some work helping with “baby LGBT” people. Basically people who are just realizing and accepting that their sexual and/or romantic desires are not purely heterosexual. They aren’t killing themselves to emotionally blackmail people. They are killing themselves because they don’t believe their lives can get better, they believe God hates them, and many of them don’t just believe that their parents are embarrassed by them and/or hate them too. Some can’t get their parents to believe them. They are told some of their sweetest desires are horrific and depraved. They are desperate for role models or for someone to just listen to them. Many in the US are terrified of being forced back into hiding again. I will tell them to please not kill themselves without first considering that their death might make people feel bad and encourage change.

I don’t see that as his point. I got that he doubts there are actually as many killing themselves as claimed and/or for the reason given, therefore it is a falsehood being used to manipulate people with guilt. But iPod should correct me if I have misread him. Edited August 17, 2022 by Calm 1

I have a hard time with the idea that we can ignore suicides among gay Latter-day Saints because the suicide rate in the church is comparable or lower than other populations. I don't think that's what he was getting at, but that's how it comes across to me. Any suicide is too many.

Of course. What I object to is people using the concept of suicide to emotionally manipulate people into agreeing with them. 1
