This is not the first conference I've seen President Nelson call for us to do the spiritual work. So what is the spiritual work? 2
Kenngo1969 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 While I can see why someone who struggles at percieving the hand of God in his life and/or in getting (or in percieving) answers to prayer (and, frankly, I often fall into one or both of those categories) might feel frustrated and dissatisfied with this state of affairs (and I empathize), there aren't really any shortcuts. While the "radio analogy" has its limitations and drawbacks, it does serve to illustrate the point: if I'm tuned to a different frequency (by distractions, skewed priorities, etc.) or if my reciever isn't in good working order (or even if it is, and I'm on the right frequency, and so forth, but there's interference ... from mortality's many vicissitudes, from my mental or emotional state, from living in a fallen world, from looking beyond the mark ... then it's going to be more difficult to get those answers. I don't know why so many struggle so much (Yours Truly included) but there are no shortcuts: If one can answer the questions necessary to get a temple recommend with the right answers (and if bis heart is in the right place and he's striving where he falls short) I have to say he's in reasonably good shape. Beyond that, all I have are the Sunday School answers: Fast, pray, study your scriptures, etc. 4

So what is the spiritual work? Where faith is the principle of action, I think the spiritual work begins with repentance. Faith to me doesn't last long without it, and increasing our spiritual capacity requires us to maintain at least a particle of it, which can certainly grow. I also think it means to keep a spiritual perspective, or at least consider the spiritual perspective, when applying other more temporal or secular approaches to developing our overall capacity in dealing with life. 2

So what is the spiritual work? I am reminded of what King Lamoni's father (I think?) said to Ammon, something along the lines that he would give away all his sins to know God. I am finding in my life that my life is a process of giving up everything holding me down and holding me back--mostly my own grievances against the world, others, God, and myself. When I give up the grievances, I find peace and God right there. 4

I asked the same question a while ago, and came up with my own personal spiritual regimen, borrowed liberally from multiple traditions, but it works for me. But it's mine. You should decide what you want to do first, and then see what spiritual practices supplement those goals.
