I believe what you refer to as ‘divine intervention’ is the practice of drawing targets around already fallen arrows.

If you only believe in marginal gains, yeh.  But if you believe  in the real world, in which God insists on allowing humans to make their own mistakes (and paying for them), then all of the gross exaggerations are the stripes we must bear to exercise free agency -- which everyone else rejects.
