Ancient Prophets and disintegration of the family prophecies

Recommended Posts

In the Family  a Proclamation to the World it says, "Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets." Does anyone know what ancient prophets prophesied about the disintegration of the family? what are these calamities supposed to be?  It seems to read that the falling apart of families will bring these bad things, as said by ancient prophets but it doesn't say who or what. I get modern ones but what ancient ones?

Calamities . . .that's an easy one.  Take a look at the Florida shooter, take a look at any mass shooter, the vast, vast majority of them come from seriously broken homes.  That's a pretty big calamity.

As far as ancient prophets, most of the time they were prophesying about the destruction of a city, people, culture.

Nathan Hays, “Family Disintegration in Judges 17-18,” Catholic Biblical Quarterly, January 2018, online at https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321058316_Family_Disintegration_in_Judges_17-18 , saying:

Quote

Judges 17–18 depicts the disintegration of a basic unit of Israel's social life: the household. These two chapters are part of a frame around the book of Judges that includes 1:1– 2:5 and 19:1–21:25. The multiple connections between the end of the frame (17:1–21:25) and the beginning (1:1–2:5) indicate that the end of Judges should be read in conjunction with the beginning. Within the first part of the frame comes the story of Achsah (1:12-15 // Josh 15:16-19), which exemplifies three aspects of the ideal family in the eyes of ancient audiences: 1) the family has a clearly defined family structure, 2) children respect their parents, and 3) parents bless their children. The narrative of Judges 17–18 shows how Israelite households at the end of the period of the judges fall far short of these three elements of ideal families. The line from Achsah at the beginning of the book to Micah at the end thus charts the trajectory of increasing disorder in families and society as a whole.

John Goldingay, Old Testament Theology, Volume One: Israel's Gospel (IVP/Paternoster, 2003/2009), 439,

Quote

When the clans fall apart, as happens after Solomon's death, this resembles the disintegration of a family. Divisions among those who trace their ancestry back to the family of Israel resemble occasions when members of a family will not talk to one another. The vision of Israel as a family invites people who divide the community or want to keep it divided to consider what they are doing.

I think Yeshua Himself was the primary one. The disintegration of the family has indirectly caused conditions He warned would come about at the time of His coming in the clouds, when the times would be as in the days of Noah.

Further Paul tells us -

1 Timothy 3:

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

He warned men would be lovers of their own selves, blasphemers, disrespectful of parents, etc. Sounds like conditions which have arisen as a result of the breakdown of the family in Western civilization.

The calamities are foretold by the prophets. Many of them. But they do not say the disintegration of the family will be the cause. That would be disobedience, sin, rejection of God, etc. The natural consequences of those things will inevitably lead to the disintegration of the family. We are seeing that unfold every day.

I suggest the basis for the prophecies is in the commandments to honor parents, not commit adultery, not covet another's loved one, etc. that edify the family and bring the attendant protection of he Lord. Al scripture is basically a family history, and all the prophecies about bad things happening have to do with disrupting God's family (covenant people and potential converts) and how His family is manifest in the flesh (the begotten sons and daughters in the flesh along both non-covenant and priesthood lines).
