snowflake Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 I had teased on a previous thread that climate change was a serious concern for our future, but I had no idea it was "sexist and misogynistic" too....this is a much bigger concern than ever! I know climate change has been linked to terrorism, and the influenza virus but now it is sexist too? What to do?!? I could hardly sleep last night!?! Does the church have a policy on climate change? 1

The Nehor Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 (edited) I wish I had audio because her response to the question sounds like a joke: “I would say that particularly for women, you’re absolutely right, they will bear the brunt of looking for the food, looking for the firewood, looking for the place to migrate to when all of the grass is finally gone as the desertification moves south and you have to keep moving your livestock for your crops are no longer growing, they’re burning up in the intense heat that we’re now seeing reported across North Africa, into the Middle East, and into India," Still, got to be outraged. I mean the President is saying that those who do not applaud him are guilty of treason but the real concern for our future is from a political has-been making jokes. I agree it sounds like a joke, but I heard her response on the radio this morning and thought.......she actually believes this! Then I thought, college students at Georgetown are paying huge money to be bombarded with this nonsense!

Do you think she thought of this herself or did she learn it from some other "enlightened" individual?

Being a "panel on women and human rights" at the prestigious Georgetown i'm sure the audience was filled with "repressed" women. I'm sure that just about everything is sexist and misogynistic in Hillary's world, including climate change, the national debt, etc.
cinepro Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 In order for it to be "sexist", you would have to first actually believe that those effects are going to happen. No one is saying "I believe in global warming and all the predictions made about how it will affect the earth, but I don't care because it will mostly be the women who have to adapt."

Lewis once said he would not hang a dog based on a news article and that sense of restraint probably applies here too. Obama and Clinton for some reason still seem to be hit with an almost visceral hatred by so many. I have never seen such widespread hatred and villainization of a previous President or failed Presidential candidate before. I have my suspicions as to why those two attract that level of hatred but I should probably keep them to myself. Edited February 8, 2018 by The Nehor

Right.....no one. I certainly would not say or think that. No sir. That would just be......silly.....

I am getting the impression that it is supremely difficult for women to ever contradict when the topic has anything to do with the feminist agenda. If you mention sexism, misogyny, or how terrible men are then whatever you say is sacrosanct and cannot be wrong and no female dissenters are expected or tolerated. This degree of group think will take time to work itself out, but until then society will entertain such stupid statements such as this one and those who actually believe it as a truth.
Rajah Manchou Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 (edited) OK, I'm going to risk being shunned and argue that society's response to changing climate patterns have had hidden consequences for women. That's not to say that there aren't also hidden consequences for men, but Clinton's comment was at a Human Rights and Women conference, so you could expect her comments to emphasize that topic. What is happening, and this is likely what Clinton is referring to, is an increase of abnormal weather patterns in places like Africa and India that has ruined prospects for rural families and subsistence farmers who now need to adapt. The response, in some cases, is to relocate to urban centers and marry their youngest daughters off at earlier ages. I'm not going to go as far as saying this is SEXIST, but in fairness, neither did Hillary Clinton. This topic was covered in a series produced by the Thomas Reuters Foundation. Rajah, I agree with you. As you read more of what she was talking about I think she was talking about areas of the world that would be affected by extended droughts, etc., and which also have cultures where women still handle the majority, if not all, of the work in the home. However, the problem was that Clinton agreed with the student's proposal, "Clinton addressed a woman in the audience who suggested that weather, typically an objective force that impacts populations equally regardless of their innate characteristics, was, in fact, sexist. Clinton, of course, immediately agreed." She then went on to clarify that women would take on the majority of the burden created by climate change. Her attack was on these cultures rather than climate change. My guess, she is too much of a politician to tell the young woman her proposal is nuts, but that sexism is within cultures, which have nothing to do with climate change.

I'm always suspicious of media paraphrasing. I tried to find a clip of the student suggesting "that weather is sexist". I highly doubt that this student said that, and that Clinton immediately agreed. You can see in the clip that Clinton says nothing about weather or climate change being sexist. Sounds like absurd media manipulation to me. Edited February 8, 2018 by Rajah Manchou 1
The Nehor Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 (edited) Oh, I missed that it came from the Daily Wire. I can now safely discount the characterization of the remarks and assume it was quote mining to incite outrage. Looks like it worked. Edited February 8, 2018 by The Nehor
Storm Rider Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 Ever since I stopped watching CNN and/or Fox News or any other 24 hour news station I could not tell you what is a good source for news or what is a bad source. I question all sources and it would not surprise me if this is a quote made from whole cloth. However, I did do a search to try and find another source for the comment. What I did find is this article about Congresswoman Barbara Lee (Yes, she is from California) who introduced a bill, " Women and Climate Change Act of 2018, H.R. 4932, to develop coordinated strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change on women and girls around the world." I then verified that this is a real bill by going to Congress.gov to see if this enlightened individual actually did this - and she did. The Global Dispatch, the newspaper that had the article (I don't know this paper from fly paper) also stated, "Joining Hillary Clinton on the “Sexist” nature of the weather was the Sierra Club and Planned Parenthood, who endorsed the bill." Regardless, what is still being conflated is the main thrust of a belief that climate change will impact women far more than men throughout the world and that something needs to be done about it and the idea that climate change is sexist. If anyone did use that language it was obviously a ridiculously poor choice of wording. The discussion, without any degree of evidence that I could find, is the proposition that women will be significantly more impacted by climate change than all other humans. I see no logic, reason, or support for such a proposition.

I think this has the info, but need to look through it to find it, all the clips I have seen cut off the question...wonder why: https://www.c-span.org/video/?440650-1/hillary-clinton-speaks-women-human-rights See 1:12:00 It is so not "climate change is sexist". Women are "disproportionately vulnerable to these risks" is mentioned in the question, the risks being about conflicts over scare resources and worsening of the risks of certain kinds of natural disasters. It is clipped because she spends the first part of her response talking about getting the US into the Paris Agreement. The clip used starts at about 1:15:00 Edited February 8, 2018 by Calm 1

From my reading of her comment, that's not at all what she is saying. What she does say in her comment, that is conveniently edited, is that "60 percent of the smallholder farmers in the world are women". So it sounds like she is suggesting that because smallholder farmers are predominantly women and smallholder farmers will bear the brunt of the negative effects of climate change, that women will be more impacted by climate change. But somehow the headlines go even further with this exaggeration "Hillary Clinton Now Says Climate Change Is Sexist, Misogynistic" She didn't say that, not even close. Rajah Manchou Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 (edited) Here's the question (in full) that was asked by an unidentified student via a moderator: "Climate change is anticipated to exacerbate conflict over scarce resources and worsen the risks of certain natural disasters. Women are disproportionately vulnerable to these risks. How can women help other women face these risks?” This is how the Daily Wire summarized the student's question: "A woman in the audience who suggested that weather, typically an objective force that impacts populations equally regardless of their innate characteristics, was, in fact, sexist." That's some horrible news reporting right there, and the sadder thing is dozens if not hundreds of conservative news outlets ran with the same story. Not a single one of them mentioned the other panelists, one being a female former political prisoner from Burma and another a victim of ISIS human trafficking. So I gather the conservative press feels the most pressing and shocking story here, even keeping you awake at night, is that Hillary Clinton thinks that weather is sexist. Calm Posted February 8, 2018 Posted February 8, 2018 (edited) Thanks for doing the whole quote. I had enough after I found the video and times (I don't like watching videos, too slow). The paraphrase is so bad it has to be intentional. Edited February 8, 2018 by Calm 2
