Keys of the Church in 1831

In Doctrine and Covenants 42:69 we read,  Lift up your hearts and rejoice, for unto you the kingdom, or in other words, the keys of the church have been given. Even so. Amen."

What keys are they referring to that have been given? This was given in 1831

The responsibility to lead and receive revelation for the Church.
The Church is an organization, and its head has keys given, just as a Bishop does for their ward, an Elder's quorum president does for their quorum, etc.

And then there are the higher priesthood keys that weren't restored until long after 1831.  Some in 1836.  Some in 1842.  Some in 1843.
Some had already been on the earth since 1829.
But the keys of authority over the Church were restored around the same time as the Church.

Just to be clear, the term "keys" was not found in the revelation from 1831.  It was added later when the concept of keys seemed to be developed within the Church and applied to priesthood.

The Church never felt it necessary to tell us when updates or changes were made to the D&C.  They normally just give us the original date of the revelation, even if the current version of it differs from the version first given at the time claimed.

No, not that we have any record of.  He was just a child when Joseph was killed.  We have no record of an ordination.

Assuming you are talking about Joseph Smith Jr and not Sr, no his son was a child at the time BY was elected to be President. Although the keys are passed through the priesthood, they lay "dormant" for most people until they are called to exercise them in a particular Church office or calling. The priesthood leaders who left to reorganize the Church never did hold a valid office as set forth in the D & C, and therefore, they never validly exercised the keys of the President ie the Reorganized Church or now the Community of Christ. As they will soon learn, they are apostate. The keys of the Presidency were not to be passed by lineage. You can read up about it in the D & C. Contrary to popular belief, the President does not exercise all the keys of the Priesthood - he holds and exercises all the temporal keys for the governance of the temporal kingdom of the Church. Many keys lay dormant and have not been turned/opened - waiting to be opened by Michael or other means of revelation.
