JulieM Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 (edited) One of my posts just disappeared today. It was a respond to Stem's apology (now moved to the Social Hall). It contained no personal attacks, but just support for him and saying I hope he sticks around and that I haven't seen him do anything that he needs to apologize for. Mainly just a supportive post. My response was removed and then his thread was immediately locked. Now I see that other's posts have also just disappeared or been removed in Juliann's thread (by those who are voicing disagreement or different opinions). Is this standard procedure and has this always been going on? Maybe I've just never had one of mine removed before, so I haven't noticed. It just seems odd and that's why I'm asking. JulieM Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 (edited) Well, it looks as if at least one of the removed posts is now back, so maybe it was just a glitch? I had to wonder, because there were no personal attacks in my post that was removed. I'd just post it again, but the thread is locked now Edited June 20, 2017 by JulieM
Popular Post MiserereNobis Posted June 20, 2017 Popular Post Posted June 20, 2017 I lived in Czechoslovakia for a little bit in the early 90s. I was talking to an old man who lived through both the Nazi occupation and the communist take over. He said the Gestapo came for you in broad daylight wearing uniforms and then the posted the names of those they executed everyday. The communist secret police came in the middle of the night wearing leather jackets and you just disappeared and no one knew what happened to you. He said he preferred the Gestapo because even though the end result was the same, at least you knew what was going on. 5
stemelbow Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I've had a couple posts here or there just plain get nixed with no explanation or notice. I figured it was someone behind the scenes running things around here deciding for whatever reason to get rid of it. I can't see what's going on in Juliann's thread though, so I can't speak to that. Luckily your post was seen by me before it was summarily seemingly deleted, because, as I told you, I'm grateful for your words. 1

This is disturbing if its intentional manipulation without notification. I support moderation as long as its transparent and fair. Moderators, you need to be transparent with your practices. 1
Calm Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Off topic posts and often responses to them on threads that have been requested to be limited have always been removed by mods. At times it may not appear that way because mods were not able to get to the topic quickly enough to make a difference. What determines how off topic they need to be to be removed probably depends on how derailing they appear to be or a particular mod's approach and probably time able to devote to it, but that is just speculation based on what I have noticed removed and what doesn't get removed while I am paying attention (many more may get removed that I don't notice if it happens after I read it.

They post a warning it is happening as they did in the thread referenced. Usually this "posters and posts are being removed"

Seems like a pretty poor way of communicating a more aggressive removal practice than is typically found on this board, just for that one thread. If the mods are going to start practicing more aggressive removal, then they need to find a more effective way of communicating or they will lose the trust of the community. 1

Jeanne Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I had a some posts disappear yesterday...kind of makes you feel like a piece of trash. 2

Yes it did if it was in the thread Juliann started. I saw it in one of Stem's posts. I copied/pasted the above red comment from there. Your post made me curious if they had and it is easy to scan for the red, so I went to look. Posters don't receive warnings in their posts all the time from what I have seen in threads and heard reported. I don't really have a clue about notifications as that would not be in public, but from what others have said it sounds like they are rarely, if ever given. I can only think of once where someone said something that led me to believe mods had PMed or emailed them something. Moderation on this board was set up to involve minimal effort from what I have seen. Probably because they looked around and saw that extended interaction or explanations didn't help that much. In my experience on ZLMB, it actually seemed to make it worse. Edited June 20, 2017 by Calm

Calm Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 People might want to refresh their awareness of the guidelines by reading them if they are wondering why moderation was done. It might help you avoid future confusion.

I suspect it will remain a mystery as mods rarely respond to questions. My guess is they figure the guidelines and common sense are enough. Edited June 20, 2017 by Calm
stemelbow Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Calm what JulieM and myself are talking about are posts that disappear without any note left behind by mods. I"ve had this happen a couple of times. I saw JulieM's post in the thread she is alluding to (apology thread) now it's not only not there, but there is no note at all saying it was removed--no red letters, no words. it was just quietly deleted. I've had that happen in the past too. As for the mods deleting posts here and there and leaving notes about it being off topic or whatever, I don't care. I let the decide. Thank you Stemelbow. The rest of you are responsible for reading the board guidelines or the words below General Discussion heading. For topics and discussions concerning LDS Doctrine, History, Geography, etc... Please stay on topic all off topic posts will be moved/deleted. Moderators are not going to babysit hundreds of posters until we get paid the going rate. 1
