No, we built all the weapons as a detente against the Soviets. They also serve as a bulwark against the Chinese. In theory if another power gained a nuclear weapon and a delivery method we could also retaliate against them. Using them as a threat against ISIS (which is what Trump suggested) is silly. It is almost impossible to imagine a scenario where ISIS is able to nuke us or throw chemical or bioweapons at us which are pretty much the only justifications that would justify nuclear retaliation. So for what reason is he considering using nukes against ISIS?

You might find such scenarios “almost impossible to imagine.“ But FEMA and the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Asymmetric Warfare do not.  But what do they know?

FEMA actually trains civilian first responders how to respond to chemical and biological attacks (some of this training includes exercises conducted in an environment of live nerve agents).  A few years ago, the Center for Asymmetric Warfare conducted a functional  exercise based on a scenario of terrorists detonating an “improvised nuclear device”  (in this case, an Hiroshima-type bomb) in the Los Angeles area.  Apparently, neither LA, nor Ventura counties found this scenario “almost impossible to imagine.  Otherwise, they probably wouldn‘t have co-sponsored the exercise, nor would various county and city agencies from both counties have participated.

Funnily enough, I helped create a few scenarios like that for training a group of emergency reponder students. It is possible and should be trained for. It is almost impossible for them to do it without state support in which case we would have a target for retaliation and it is not a stateless enemy. In that case, ISIS would not be the target and would not be why we would use them.

The idea of using nukes against ISIS now would only occur to the feeble doddering mind of an idiot completely unaware of military and geopolitical realities. I just hope no one would be dumb enough to put someone like that into a position of power.

Is this figurative?

If not, anyone else think moving to the mountains in UT, CO, MT, ID might be a good idea?

Yep. Sounds about right to me.  If anything can save someone from an atomic holocaust, the power of faith and the authority of the priesthood  (God's power) are the only things I can think of to do it.

I have no problem with miracles. I do have problems with depending on them in this life.

In the event of nuclear war my plan is that of Shadrach and the other two whose names I do not remember how to spell. Either I die in the fiery furnace or God saves me. I am okay with either one.

And I hope that citizens are not stuck in such a deep confirmation-bias rut to believe that electronic voting tallies always reflect actual votes.

Our young friend across the pond with his finger in the dike proved otherwise long ago,..

In the event of another nuclear war Abendingoveriwillgo and kissing it (my knees) goodbye is a better option. :o

PS; The spelling is Abednego. :)

Yeah, but I couldn't remember how to spell Meshach and couldn't remember if Adednego had a hyphen and was too lazy to look it up.

Best collection of names ever.  I have always (theorectically) wanted three cats or dogs so I can call them that.  One alone just doesn't sound right.

Hah.  Ahm Larry, this's muh brother, Darryl, an' this's muh other brother, Darryl. ;)

P.S.: I can envision the confusion now: "Not you, Darryl!" ;)

P.P.S.:  Larry, Moe, and Curly?  (With my long, flowing mane, I got dibs on "Curly." :D)
