ERayR Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Sorry SC... there was a news report of an accident involving a self-driving car... about a week or so ago... GG Ah and just when one thought science was going to solve all the problems.
ERayR Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Perhaps not entirely, but self-driving cars will make our streets safer, that is if everyone had a self-driving car. Google tested self-driving cars for thousands of miles, the Atlantic reports, "Google’s fleet of self-driving cars has learned this lesson first hand. Its cars have driven in autonomous mode for more than 1 million miles since 2009. In all that time, they’ve been involved in 16 accidents through August—none of which were caused by the self-driving car" . I wonder why people talk so much about terrorists when drunk drivers are far more likely to kill us. we should accept the refugees because our country ruined Iraq. The people that are against accepting the refugees are the same people that wanted a war with Iraq. I know several truck drivers who have driven twice that many miles without an accident. 1

I wonder why people talk so much about terrorists when drunk drivers are far more likely to kill us. I don't know. Then again I work in a job designed to keep drunk drivers off the road so I see those statistics all the time. It has to do with impact. I remember reading a book when I was a teenager. The premise was that some supernatural horrors were real. The government had a special agency to combat them. When a director in the organization was asked why it was kept under wraps the the director explained that these supernaturals killed less then 50 people a year, far less then die of disease or accidents and other causes but revelation of their existence would cause a panic out of all proportion to the threat. Terrorist attacks are rare in the west and kill relatively few but their nature is shocking enough to make us treat them more seriously then other more statistically significant threats. 1
TheSkepticChristian Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I know several truck drivers who have driven twice that many miles without an accident. LOL funny. Of course, they have that job because they are good drivers. Please highlight the full quote. "Its cars have driven in autonomous mode for more than 1 million miles since 2009. In all that time, they’ve been involved in 16 accidents through August—none of which were caused by the self-driving car" Imagine what would happen is everyone had a self-driving car. Terrorist attacks are rare in the west and kill relatively few but their nature is shocking enough to make us treat them more seriously then other more statistically significant threats. Why? Drunk drivers kill thousands of children in the US. I am more worried about 1. Fight traffic accidents with self-driving cars. 2. Fight disease with Medical research. 3. Fight Climate Change 4. Fight Drug Cartels 5. Fight terrorists Terrorists are a problem, but not our biggest problem, we need to worry more about other stuff.
The Nehor Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Imagine what would happen is everyone had a self-driving car. Right now everyone would get whiplash if the guy who tested them that I know is any indication. I am excited about the technology but it needs a lot of refining and work before it is practical.
TheSkepticChristian Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) I am excited about the technology but it needs a lot of refining and work before it is practical. and trillions of dollars in research to make the self-driving cars, not trillions of dollars (yearly) to fight terrorists. We need to rethink our priorities. Our country spent Trillions of dollars in the Iraq War, but that only caused more terrorists and angry Muslims. Right now everyone would get whiplash if the guy who tested them that I know is any indication. I just quoted a news report "Its cars have driven in autonomous mode for more than 1 million miles since 2009. The Nehor Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I just quoted a news report "Its cars have driven in autonomous mode for more than 1 million miles since 2009. In all that time, they’ve been involved in 16 accidents through August—none of which were caused by the self-driving car" I was not disputing that. It is just that the cars tend to slow and accelerate intermittently in some conditions which is hard on the body. They need work. Putting self-driving cars on the road now would be insane, especially without driver back-up which all of them currently have.
TheSkepticChristian Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 They need work. Putting self-driving cars on the road now would be insane, especially without driver back-up which all of them currently have. I agree they need work, but we can accelerate the future if our country spends more money in technology and scientific research. We don't need to spend trillions of dollars to fight terrorists, our country can use at least half of that money to improve the self-driving cars instead.
Calm Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 but who caused the accident? that is what I thought.Being able to avoid being in an accident is part of good driving. 1

I would rather put that money into NASA or development of our transportation and power infrastructure. Anything but more boondoggle aircraft carriers. 1
ERayR Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Did Skeptic just successfully hijack another thread? He is good. 1
sjdawg Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 First of all EVERYONE who is a North American, someone in their family came here from somewhere else, we don't have to look super far back to find them. Secondly, if we want stricter entry requirements, wouldn't the same Gov't, that they mistrust, be the ones to tighten up the requirements? It's like we want the Gov't when things are bad but we don't want them when things are good, do you trust the Gov't or don't you? you can't have it both ways. Thirdly, I suspect some? most? of the refugees will go home after this thing is over, I mean let's face it who wants to live in Saskatchewan or Nebraska?!If they get citizenship they will never leave. Canada and/or the USA will be paradise and they will love their new country for the peace, safety, and stability it brings to their lives. I work with a man who has family in Syria. Every day for his family is full of fear. There were bombs dropped 2 KM from where is family is living just last week. 1
sjdawg Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 I am not going to pretend Islam is a "religion of peace". It can be but it depends on the practitioner. The same could be said of Christianity unfortunately. I live in a Muslim country and have never felt safer. There was a terrorist attack here in June but it was a very isolated incident. People here are honest, kind, and peaceful. In fact, they are generally amazed at the level of violence that takes place in the USA.

carbon dioxide Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 (edited) Perhaps not entirely, but self-driving cars will make our streets safer, that is if everyone had a self-driving car. I wonder why people talk so much about terrorists when drunk drivers are far more likely to kill us. "Self-driving cars like those being tested by Google have been more prone to get into accidents than conventional vehicles, but that doesn't mean they're less safe, according to a new report from transportation researchers. They found that self-driving cars had an average crash rate of 9.1 per million miles traveled, versus 4.1 for conventional vehicles. Likewise, self-driving vehicles had a higher injury rate (3.29 per million miles traveled) than conventional vehicles (1.02). But the authors noted the self-driving vehicles were not at fault in any of the 11 total crashes (all involving Google cars) reported. Furthermore, there haven't been any fatalities, and all the injuries were deemed minor." http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/innovation/self-driving-cars-more-prone-accidents-its-not-their-fault-n453956 Personally I like driving and I would never own one. I believe that driving is a skill that one needs to constantly keep up with to be a good driver. I have no reason to believe that self driving cars will ever be good in bad weather conditions like snowstorms. Having a bunch of people who spend more of the year not driving around and then being able to manually drive in a blizzard will not work as well and probably increase accident rates than what would normally find in a blizzard today. Lets face it. Google is only in this for one reason. They want people to spend less time driving and more time staring into a smartphone clicking on ads. This is all about increasing addiction to portable electronic devices. Just make society more lazy and people being incapable of doing things for themselves. ERayR Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 not if everyone in the country as one. Modern self-driving cars don't cause traffic accidents. I bet you are more afraid of terrorists than drunk drivers. I live cautiously but I don't live may life in fear.
sunstoned Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I rarely agree with you but I agree with you on this one. What is happening is the politics of fear. The terrorists win when we operate on fear. I am happy to welcome those in need into the USA even if there is a small risk some terrorist may sneak in with them.We should allow them safe harbor in our country. After all, this country was founded on the principles of freedom. It would be hypocritical to turn them away.
sjdawg Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 Okay you must not follow Sharia law then. There are some aspects of Sharia Law incorporated into the legal system but not with extremist interpretations.
ERayR Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 There are some aspects of Sharia Law incorporated into the legal system but not with extremist interpretations. How much? Are all citizens have the same measure of freedom (men and women)?
