CV75 Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I saw a clip recently of Elder Nelson instructing Church leaders last April; this is one of the "prophetic priorities" -- at least that is how our local leaders refer to them. He made it pretty clear that if we do our part individually to keep the Sabbath better, faith will increase in the earth. I think they are really counting on us to step up and do better, for the sake of the big picture.

CV75 Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 When observed in Spirit we observe the law. The issue is more with honest search for the Spirit's guidance. When we take one day each week to focus on our Father in Heaven and his Son; the gospel; reflect on our need for forgiveness; how we can become more like our Savior; seeking a stronger presence of the Spirit in our lives; then keep the Sabbath day holy is a gift from God. We observe it because we love him and in search of holiness in our own lives. Observing little laws does not bring holiness; it brings observance of little laws. Holiness comes from have pure motivations for obedience to laws and being led by the Spirit. No doubt it is a precious gift ("the sabbath was made for man"), and I think we are also being asked to give the Sabbath back to the Lord (as in "Lord's Day"); that is, to recognize and use the gift as you and several others have described. 1

He encouraged the troops to honor the Lord's Day and keep it Holy.My personal belief is that keeping the Sabbath or at least their attempts to lead to the divine guidance they needed during the revolution.

JAHS Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I don't think that people took what you said very seriously. But they were nice sentiments but perhaps impossible to implement. Just the cell phone itself would put a dent in your words. Not to mention the demands of worklife etc. Since stores are open on sunday, there are church members who need to work on sundays. No work, no job. Of course, they can attempt to opt out or work every other sunday etc but if not successful, they must work after attending church etc. Such is the economic system that most lds seem to vote in favor of. Of course, if we go back in time, sunday was a day of rest for most workers. What caused the change in worklife?If they aren't going to take what I said seriously then why was the question even asked? I understand that sabbath day worship needs to be somewhat tailored to fit the kind of lifestyles we have today (The Sabbath was made for man... . ). But even if we have to work on that day we can still keep an attitude of worship in our hearts as we work. Oh and I use my cell phone to read the scriptures ;-)

He encouraged the troops to honor the Lord's Day and keep it Holy.My personal belief is that keeping the Sabbath or at least their attempts to lead to the divine guidance they needed during the revolution.Yes, and I think it is a very reasonable and manageable request, that we each do a little something more about keeping the Sabbath to increase faith in the earth--I find the source of the phrase (D&C 1:11-23) and the application of its context to the covenants we make on the Sabbath (noting that the Sabbath itself is a sign of our covenant with Him) very interesting as there is a lot of "prophetic priority" on partaking of he Sacrament as well.
