Mormonmaniac Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 I'm curious... does anyone here think that SCOTUS is going to rule against legal recognition of gay marriage? Regardless of whether you think that decision is right or wrong. I feel like the Brethren have decided that SCOTUS will rule in favor of gay marriage and that's why they moved forward with the UT legislation earlier this year. Did you read the position on the OP? The church is not in favor of the judges ruling in favor of gay marriage.
Mormonmaniac Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 I don't think they'll have any real choice but to rule in favor of gay marriage. There isn't really any kind of valid legal case to be made against it. As far as I understand the ruling will be to see if it is a state issue and not a federal issue.
Daniel2 Posted April 13, 2015 Author Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) Gay marriage is up there with the worst of blasphemies.Relgion and it's accompanying vocabulary is most sublime, IMO, when it moves us to greater compassion, commitment, and care for one another.Religion and it's accompanying vocabulary is poorest, IMO, when it is used to disparage, demean, divide, and berate others. Religion and it's accompanying vocabulary is cheapest, IMO, when it is used to disparage, demean, and berate others. So you think it wrong for God to condemn sin?
california boy Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Gay marriage is up there with the worst of blasphemies. Since you are pushing for some Biblically run government that you can impose your own personal religious beliefs that you think are what God wants on citizens of the United States, shouldn't you be pushing for stoning all gays rather than worrying about gay marriage?? 3
rockpond Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Did you read the position on the OP? The church is not in favor of the judges ruling in favor of gay marriage. Obviously the Brethren are not in favor of a pro-SSM ruling. But that doesn't mean that they might not already be resigned to the outcome.

Daniel2 Posted April 13, 2015 Author Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) So you think it wrong for God to condemn sin?I see nothing sinful in two consenting adults wanting to strengthen their family, increase their committment, publicly declare their intent to care for one another, and protect their children through the civil institution of marriage.Nothing I have seen or read thus far convinces me that God has condemned it, either. Mormonmaniac Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 I see nothing sinful in two consenting adults wanting to strengthen their family, increase their committment, publicly declare their care for one another, and protect their children through the civil institution of marriage. As long as those consenting adults are male and female in a heterosexual monogamous relationship there is nothing sinful at all. Gay marriage is blasphemous before the eyes of God.
california boy Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) So here is my prediction on how the Supreme Court will rule. They will rule in favor of gay marriage and it will definitely not be a 5/4 ruling. Scott Lloyd can start his ticker on that statement. I think it is most likely to be a 7/2 ruling but could possibly be a 6/3 ruling. Edited April 13, 2015 by california boy 1
Daniel2 Posted April 13, 2015 Author Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) As long as those consenting adults are male and female in a heterosexual monogamous relationship there is nothing sinful at all. Gay marriage is blasphemous before the eyes of God.I absolutely support marriage between heterosexual couples as well. Marriage consistently shows that it is the soundest, surest, and best way gor heterosexual couples to form stable, loving, happy families. As for the rest of your post, I stand by my earlier comment that religious language is most sublime and strongest when it serves to increase compassion, committment, and care, and it is poorest and weakest when it is used as a means to demean, degrade, divide, and berate. I prefer to live my life from a center of compassion, rather than hostility, and am content that any God worth adoration will know my heart. Edited April 13, 2015 by Daniel2
california boy Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 We are led by a living prophet. He hasnt asked us to stone the homosexuals so what are you really after? I haven't hear the living prophet ever refer to homosexuality or gay marriage as one of the worse blasphemies. So you are not getting your attitude towards gay marriage from the living prophet. If you have such a quote from Thomas S. Monson, please quote it or quit saying that you are following the living prophet. The worst of blasphemies language comes from Old Testament prophets. They wanted all gays stoned to death. If you want to use Old Testament condemnation, shouldn't you also be using Old Testament punishment?
DJBrown Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Do you see it as a direct cause effect? Gay marriage=Family destroyed, Gay Marriage Repealed=Family Saved? Ultimately, the motive behind the collective campaign to accept homosexuality is to have society not just tolerate it but to accept it as moral and good. It is not that a decision by the Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage will immediately cause many families to fall apart. It is the inevitable effect of calling something that is evil good. The effect will be seen across society. Good will be less valued. Evil will be more valued. Ultimately, it is the individuals in society whose lives will be affected by an erosion of what they accept as good. President Benson said "the price of freedom is righteousness." I believe him. Consider the affect of Bill Clinton's rationalization of his relationship with an intern. He very literally changed the definition of sex. And within ten years, surveys of teenager showed the effect of his rationalization. Ultimately, more individuals will make immoral decisions, and more families will be impacted negatively.

Daniel2 Posted April 13, 2015 Author Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) Gay marriage is blasphemous and a grievous sinWhen this is all that you are left with, in light of all the light, laughter, love, and joy, and goodness that I experience in and from my relationship with my husband and our children, your words are all the poorer and ring hollow, indeed.I hope you likewise experience joy and happiness in and from your family, as well, because I desire that all should receive the same. I'm interested to know how condemnations of sin and and divinely-inflicted punishments for sin may fit into your paradigm?
california boy Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 There are only two questions that will be discussed at the hearing on gay marriage on April 28th. 1. Does the Constitution require states to issue licenses to gay and lesbian couples? 2. Does it require states to recognize gay and lesbian couples' licenses form other states. Those are the ONLY two questions that will be presented. Marry Bonauto will argue question 1 and is allocated 30 minutes. The states defending their band will get 45 minutes to defend that band. Douglas Hallward-Driemeter will argue question 2 and is allocated 30 minutes.States will get 30 minutes to defend the right to not recognize marriage licenses from other sates. The solicitor general gets 15 minutes to argue on behalf of the U.S. Government. The ruling is expected sometime towards the end of June. Those are the mechanics of what will happen before the Supreme Court.
Daniel2 Posted April 13, 2015 Author Posted April 13, 2015 I'm interested to know how condemnations of sin and and divinely-inflicted punishments for sin may fit into your paradigm? That's a great question, but beyond the scope of this thread about marriage, the church, and SCOTUS. Can we discuss in another thread?
Kenngo1969 Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Well, I'm not a lawyer, but I haven't seen any kind of compelling legal argument against SSM. All kinds of religious arguments can be made, but those aren't relevant in a court case. To be specific, I haven't seen anyone make any kind of case for why the state should have an interest in banning gay couples from getting married. If the Tenth Amendment doesn't mean anything anymore, let's have the people who believe that go on record, demonstrate some political courage, and call for its repeal.

When I asked Kingsfield what most people outside elite legal and academic circles don’t understand about the way elites think, he said “there’s this radical incomprehension of religion.”“They think religion is all about being happy-clappy and nice, or should be, so they don’t see any legitimate grounds for the clash,” he said. “They make so many errors, but they don’t want to listen.”It's sad to see this "radical incomprehension" so widespread here. But perhaps not altogether surprising.Regards,Russell

Not an appropriate comment.

And I think just about everyone else get's it as well at this point. You are just a troll and have no interest in acutally discussing what the thread is about. I think it would be wise to just ignore you until you actually have something to contribute to this thread. 1
