How can they be responsible for our mistakes? Of course they can't.But the better question is "can the Church?"If you believe the priesthood ban was ever valid/of God then the Church is hardly to blame either.If you believe God NEVER sanctioned the priesthood ban then the Church would be to blame. I don't think the ban itself has been disavowed to the extent that its very existence is considered an error by the Church.

It seem to me to have been disavowed (including ideas about the role of the preexistence in the ban, any curse coming from Cain or Ham, and the ban itself), if you pay close attention to what the essay said. I understand that not everyone reads it that way, but I can see no other way to read it. It seems to have been written to disavow the ban using the softest language possible. In any case, this kind of stumbling block, no matter what the source, could understandably cause anyone to stumble and fall. That wouldn't be a reflection of anyone's lack of character or lack of faith. Edited April 13, 2015 by Gray

I believe listening to people can cause us to fall. This is why it is so important to read the word of God daily. He helps us discern right from wrong in his Word.....to help us not stumble. I personally believe that God allows things to happen in our life if we are off track....but he does not cause them to happen....if that makes sense. ie God allowing us to stumble will hopefully guide us back on the correct path. This mortal world is put in motion and stuff happens to the righteous and the unrighteous. How we deal with these challenges is the difference between a disciple of Christ, an enlightened individual for the secular bunch, and those less than these types of people. As you said, God allows things to happen.
