Teancum Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I think there are non negotiable Truth Claims of the Church. The reality of God. his Son Jesus the Christ, and the Holy Ghost. That Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God.That the Book of Mormon peoples were real people. That The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has all the authority from God it needs to do the work of God. Mr, Dehlin for his own reasons has chosen to publicly reject those Truth Claims. He has already left the Church religiously and emotionally . The Church has just made it official physically. He is welcome to attend our meetings, and if he feels so inclined to seek readmission to the Church. I hope for his own sake he does so, but it doesn't look promising.Hmmmm, well, I guess so. Many of your non negotiables lack evidence really. A couple of them, well the evidence seems to speak against them. So the question really is how much can someone devieate from these non negotiables and remain a member in good standing? and how vocal can they be? I have doubts about all of them and told that to my bishop and SP in my last TR interview. But I still obey the rules and I said I hope it's all true and they gave me a temple recommend . I was rather surprised.
Hamba Tuhan Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) So the question really is how much can someone devieate from these non negotiables and remain a member in good standing? and how vocal can they be? And whilst we're at it, precisely how many steps can someone take on the Sabbath before s/he has walked too far? Edited February 10, 2015 by Hamba Tuhan

By the way, if you are truly sincere in your hope, I'd give you a temple recommend too. Edited February 10, 2015 by Hamba Tuhan

Which ones?

thesometimesaint Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) Dehlin may feel more welcome in a schismatic branch of Mormonism that does not have the same rules, such as Community of Christ, etc. Maybe not he has said he doubts the existence of God, and the Truth Claims of the Bible. It would appear he is more atheistic than anything else. Edited February 10, 2015 by thesometimesaint
KevinG Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 The same fundamentalist thinking that prevents some from understanding the role of agency when they are staunch defenders of the LDS Church, also shackles their belief systems when trying to understand the nature of an imperfect mortal, holding the priesthood, and learning line by line, precept by precept, over time. I happen to think it is a wonderful thing, that we can learn as an organization, to cast off old erroneous beliefs, and through obedience and faith come closer to the mind and knowledge of God. The fact that we needed to be prepared to accept the revelations on the priesthood, but when faced with those revelations, accepted them as a vast majority of Saints, says volumes about our positive, continued growth as a Church. 2
USU78 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Dehlin may feel more welcome in a schismatic branch of Mormonism that does not have the same rules, such as Community of Christ, etc. Except that the press isn't interested in stories about the CofC.
