Is ‘Numerology’ The Work Of The Devil?

Last night I went to my bi-monthly Bible study group from my old church. I have been going for over 3 years and know most of the members just as long. I enjoy going and get alot out of going. Great time and people.

However, I brought something with me to share with the group. It was meant strictly as a fun novelty and I made that clear. I had no actual believe in what I brought. It was a play on the alphabet and numbers. As in a form of numerology.

Everyone seem to get a kick out of it and enjoyed it as a novelty and nothing more, but one guy. He took it as numerology, the work of the devil. He wasn’t joking. He was really upset and passionate about it. I did apologize for it, but got lost in why he would take it so seriously, especially when no one else was.

I looked but can not find any references in scripture about numerology. So I wanted to know if numerology is the work of the devil and/or a sin?

Interesting thing.....when one reads the bible, we see that certain numbers have significant meaning in certain context. For example 3, 12, and 40 can be seen both in biblical and LDS doctrine. Like anything, I'm sure it can be corrupted. However numerology appears to have played a role in ancient Hebrew culture

Well, this site claims these verses are about numerology, but while I can see some of them dealing with divination, etc. that way, others seemed to be stuck in there to make up numbers.  ;)

The scriptures seem full of it.

1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 12, 13, 40, 100

All have some kind of meaning. Now you can take it too far as some Middle Ages theologians did where they started plotting out hell and the number of demons in it and the number of genders they had (Middle Ages theologians were WEIRD; most middle-aged theologians are too).

I guess it depends upon your definition of numerology.  Numbers that seem to repeat themselves in scriptural context are not numerology to me.  Attempting to divine the future based upon a "key" of interpretation of scripture fits within numerology.  I think sin enters the picture anytime we attempt to undermine our relationship with the Godhead and begin to focus on a process that we feel is a shortcut to an end we desire.

Well this is  my opinion that is that anything that take you away from the Gospel and God can be of the Devil. So it is how you view Numerology is the key and in your relationship to God and the Gospel will be important in the grand schemes of things.
