Affirmation Issues A "read The Book Of Mormon" Challenge To Its Members

This is the central issue. The historicity of the BOM is only as important as the Church (and individual members) require it to be.

With the movement in the church understanding of the process of "translating" the Book of Abraham it is not required that there is a necessary equivalency between the original "manuscript" and the final revealed scripture. Afterall Joseph Smith spent most of his time translating not even looking at the plates. The church is now actively promoting the papyrus from which the book of abraham was revealed may have simply been a catalyst that created the context which allowed JS to translate as a possible option.

We dont know the first thing about revelation and prophetic process. We assume it requires historical authenticity but really, Jesus taught in stories, not historical facts.

True, yet the Church still maintains no matter what happened during translation of the BOA, that it is historically accurate.

Good for them.

I personally don't see a need to criticize their approach.

Depends on who's side you're on.  If one is a believing LDS, then one ought to be concerned with Affirmation statements such as:

Affirmation holds that "homosexuality and homosexual relationships can be consistent with and supported by the Gospel of Jesus Christ"

....which of course is the opposite of LDS doctrine. They actually may have taken that down from their site, but all evidence I see is that they are pulling a 'John Dehlin'.

If fiction can not inspire faith, then are the parables spoken by Christ empty words?

And nearly all he taught were parables and none of what he taught was historically verifiable.

All the more reason to encourage them to study the scriptures. So the Spirit can correct errors in Doctrine

Where is your evidence that my discussion lacks good faith?

That is all in your head- your interpretation.

But after all, there are no facts, just interpretations.

I decline to enter into a discussion with you. There are plenty of others who will do so, I think.

Thank you,

I am not sure that this is directed at me, but in case it is: I have never claimed that "fiction can not inspire faith."

Thanks,

Well thanks anyway.  It appears no one here has the same views you do.  I would love to discuss it.

My views are nothing out of the ordinary in the LDS community. It looks like we just don't communicate well with each other. That's fine. There are plenty of others who can speak to the issue of historicity.

....if that statement was the statement under consideration in this thread, then yes, I may be concerned with it.

Well I will give it a shot and start a thread eventually- but I have before and no one can or will, answer my questions.

I have brought it up with some supposed experts in this area, to no avail.

This is a great thing. I joined the group, but then realized that it was about likening the scriptures to their predicament (gay Mormon). That's great, but I have nothing to contribute, so I left.

And who says the parables are fiction?

It's quite possible Christ took them from real experiences.
