Seminary Graduation Question

See here under released time:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Released_time

Options are available in a number of states apparently. I would assume having a convenient place to meet with enough students is what factors most into the decision if legally allowed.

Interesting.   The question never even came to my mind til just now.  lol.

Found this but no locations and a message board that gave some sites in CA, WA and ID besides Utah.

Also WY, AZ and Oregon...wouldn't be surprised if some in NV and CO and maybe NM.

One even went to it in Alaska at one time, thread is longer than I thought so you might want to read it yourself:

Thank You, my sincere apologies to You. Let me give a little insight. I've watched and sometimes re-watched several times, many Mormon lectures and talks;

[bYU Devotional Addresses, Discussions of Doctrine, Church Educational System Devotionals, Conversations by the Leadership]

This came about from the simple task of buying a Roku box (Streaming video), adding massive amounts of channels for later viewing, and adding  the Mormon one mostly due to the one Mormon I've ever met years ago.

It's hard to explain how refreshing it is to see programs and hear talks that have substance for our real life. So different than the mindless clatter that fills an overwhelmingly high percentage of broadcast or cable television.

These talks touch on universal truths that, to someone who's not used to hearing them, are very profound, enlightening, even exhilarating.

It's reasonable to assume that those selected to give talks at a commencement would be the best ,brightest, and possible very inspired young students.

I would have been very curious to see what these young Mormon's had to say.

But of course I'm watching from the comfort of a nice living room and without anyone else that has needs as a young child does.

But with tunnel vision of only thinking of what I would enjoy, I completely neglected the very real issue. I fully accept, appreciate and am thankful for being reminded of how caustic and insensitive my comments were.

It is kindness to correct someone who needs it as I did.

Thank You again, your child is fortunate to have an involved Mother who is also in a Church with a very enlightened and brilliant leadership and with messages of hope, caring, and doing good for others.

The more I learn about the Mormon's the more I appreciate and admire them.

In fact recently a close relative was alarmed that I'd been 'studying' about the Mormons. "they hate Catholics you know, and they are a cult".

I gently but persuasively let her see another side, using the abbreviated and nicely edited short "Messages" films,  and she did agree that these are inspired talks which are 'beautiful'; in her words.

I will not let negative comments, based on false beliefs, go unaddressed, but will use my position to correct and explain and demonstrate who the Mormon's are, using their own materials.

Yes there might have been, or might be, some Mormon's who dislike Catholics, but opinions of a good people should not be made based on a very few actions.

In my heart I sometimes wonder if people like your brother and those graduates might be the best hope of one day fixing our nation.

If wish we as a nation could put people into office of similar quality to your leadership how much better off we'd be.

I'll admit I was more annoyed about this late night, but now it's just a general curiosity.  Are all seminary graduations typically the length of sacrament meeting?

I went last night to support my brother, but if I had known how long it was going to be, I would have just shown up towards the end so I would have been able to see him get his diploma (I have a very active 16 month old who--of all days--had refused his afternoon nap).  I had pouch food and some toys, but I still spent most of the time outside in the foyer and hallway and missed when my brother received his diploma completely.  I think it would have been better if the graduation was shorter (and from my perspective, it could have been considerably shorter).

Anyways, it just had me wondering if all seminary graduations were that long or if it's just the area I live in.

Only happens once a year to one person in their life...as Church meetings go, this is tame.

Thanks, John.  It's worth mentioning, however, that while my family is LDS, I don't believe the church to be true (even though I hold close ties to it, and don't have any plans on severing them)

Cody Wyoming, a town of about 9,000 near the East entrance to Yellowstone national park, has released time seminary.  Powell Wyoming, a town of 6,000 20 miles from Cody but in the same stake (and county) has early morning seminary.  Powell actually has one more ward than Cody does, but since it is a single adult ward connected to the college there, both towns basically have 3 family wards which meeting in two different buildings in each town.

Both towns have a single high school.

Having grown up in Powell, i honestly have no idea why Cody did their seminary differently.  We were always jealous though.

It has to do with the number of LDS students at the high school. We have two high schools in the city; one of them has release time and early morning, and the second high school ( that is seriously 2 miles away) only has early morning.

I suppose that could have been it.

Having grown up in the stake, their youth numbers and ours seemed pretty even (we were all friends with each other), but i never had access to the actual numbers.

Released time I assume needs a paid teacher so you would need enough students to keep them occupied for a day.

They had two classes (freshman/sophomore, junior/senior) just like we did. The teacher only worked for those two periods and wasn't full time.

He also taught a few institute classes for adults. Mostly he traveled for CES though.

Order of Service:

1) Prayer

2) Hymn (3 verses max)

3) Talk (5-7 min max)

4) Diploma Reception

5) Hymn (3 verses max)

6) Prayer

(Follow same order for Institute Graduation)

Keep it simple and to the point. It's seminary...not HS graduation or college graduation.
