EllenMaksoud Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 So, I was listening to Public Radio yesterday. The man was talking about the idea that it takes 2 pounds of food to produce 1 pound of meal worm protein, and 20 pounds of food to get 1 pound of Beef. I tried to imagine my eating meal worms. It was a bridge too far for me. Isn't it strange that we do not speak of holding population growth. The chinese have tried, but are experiencing real backlash. I know that in a G8 meeting in Rio, in which then president Clinton attended, they talked about world population reduction down to about 2.8 billion. They never did reveal whose population was going to be "reduced".So, shifting into my Mormon mind, I find mine too polluted with Evangelical ideas about the post apocalyptic world. There are Muslim ideas in there too, and 72 virgins is NOT part of their thinking. Reluctantly, Muslims sort of just say, "Things will be nice" in a world where Isa PBUH, (Jesus the Christ to us) returns and um "fixes" things.I have been remiss in not learning specifically what Mormons believe when things are "fixed". I just can't imagine sitting around in a world with 9 billion people, eating meal worm protein. I know some of us get planets of our own, but that comes later right? I do not think I wish to have a planet of my own. I think it would be much nicer for my husband to have one and he could keep it nice for me. All these different kingdoms come later right?I get really overwhelmed with things around me and sometimes it comes to yelling, and having a hissy fit at Heavenly Father. I think he sees me like I would see a 2 year old, or something. Sigh, I have the bathroom to clean, and the carpet to shampoo.
thesometimesaint Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 I don't know much of anything, but I do know the name of the Church. Something about "...Latter-day Saints". We don't know when the Lord will return, but I've always felt that whether he comes to me or I go to him the results should be the same.Food choices are cultural. So I'm more interested in that people eat, and not so much concerned with what they eat. We do believe the earth will receive its paradisiacal glory. But we don't know exactly what that will entail. It COULD be that we will become vegetarians, and there will be Pork Chop trees. Whatever we will do in the next life, it will be under Gods' authority. The glory will be his, and we will be partakers thereof. This life is frustrating. My mom used to tell me that when you get feeling sorry for yourself. Kick yourself in the butt, and go DO SOMETHING. 2

Maybe with enough BBQ sauce and hungry enough.
EllenMaksoud Posted August 3, 2013 Author Posted August 3, 2013 Meal worms don't sound particularly appealing to me either. Maybe with enough BBQ sauce and hungry enough.Me neither. Public Radio is sometimes the throne of the Godless, or so they think. It is however, at times better than listening to corporate greed, CNN, or that bilge from FOX. Al-Jazeera is interesting at times, because you can be sure that if the West has been up to any mischief, they will reveal it.I wonder what a Mormon News channel would be like, but I would perhaps tire of the goody two shoes news. I am convinced that much secular news is produced for the purpose of producing anxiety.

Calm Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) Meal worms don't sound particularly appealing to me either. Maybe with enough BBQ sauce and hungry enough.I am thinking ground up like scrambled eggs with a lot of cumin and mango salsa.I was given a meal worm once to raise as part of a science project. Somehow it got out of its container in the closet and I imagined it climbing into the space in the walls since I couldn't find it in any of the shoes or elsewhere.Had bad dreams about it growing to monster size in there for quite some time...or ones where it was suffering endlessly starving to death.I don't do well when pets die on me, my typical nightmare involves finding little animals starving or falling apart (had a hermit crab whose legs fell off...I though he had been more quiet than normal lately). If it's really bad, it's not little animals, it's babies...sigh. Edited August 3, 2013 by calmoriah
strappinglad Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 To quote Jurassic Park, " Nature will find a way.." I have seen how nature deals with overpopulation in the animal world. It ain't pretty but it is thorough. The problem is that the folks who use the least of the world's resources will be the first to go.
Garden Girl Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Portobella mushrooms cooked well are almost as good as meat, I have no doubt that given enough time and creativity, mankind will come up with plant food that tastes as good or better than animal products....soy cheese however is not there yet. There are some things Loma Linda (Seventh-Day Adv.) have come up with that aren't too bad...How do we know it won't simply be manna... something that is just enough to provide whatever nutrient is ncessary to keep our bodies viable... I don't see us sitting down to sumptuous dinners or even a simple steak and potatoes...BTW, I used to live in Loma Linda and when we'd barbecue we'd have every dog in the neighborhood on our patio.... I used to go to the little market, and instead of a meat counter they had a lonnnngg case of nuts and seeds... Yum... beautiful. Every week I'd go in just to buy beautiful cashews, walnuts, peanuts (raw and roasted), pecans, etc etc. But the thing that made me chuckle most was the fact that for a group that doesn't believe in eating meat they sure went to a lot of trouble to try to duplicate it... I remember one can of something where the lable proclaimed.. "Tastes just like chicken!!"GG
Calm Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) I think it is rather important to start thinking about new tastes as good for themselves rather than trying to copy an old favourite. So much more enjoyable to eat when doing that. Edited August 3, 2013 by calmoriah
rpn Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 We don't know much about the earth during the second coming. We do know there will be major job shifts because there will be no evil (those perps are removed from the earth) or Satan tempting for 1000 years. So all of the infrastructure designed to control and prevent evil won't be necessary until the end of the thousand years when Satan is again unleashed for a time. And the government will be ecclesiastical, meaning that while some labor will be expended on civic functions, it will likely be assignments to do the work that is required. There will be real people living real lives, so all the same need for agriculture, education, houses, and there will continue to be need for health and medical resources because there will be births (though no deaths, so no morticians). I imagine that a big group will be involved in doing temple and family history work.

In fact put on a hamburger a hobbit would love it. Someday we probably will come up with it. But to me it will be a sad day when we give up on a good food, just because we can't control our own appetites. Take a little steak for the stomachs sake.
Freedom Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 In terms of population growth, we have enough food and resources to provide for 30 billion people or more. It has never been an issue of having enough food, but rather of proper distribution. It is also a matter or eating less meat. Distribution problems are caused by poverty. Poverty is caused by ignorance or inadequate education. Two boom industries after the second coming will be education and environmental clean up.
lotharson Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Does the mormon Church still teach that mormon males can become small gods, but that's utterly impossible for females? No offense is intended, I'm just trying to better understand the LDS. Calm Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 (edited) He can't start it yet, being a new member with only four posts.Lothar, hold that thought until you reach 25 posts than you can start your own thread.I would suggest you spend that time finding something that supports your claim that we ever taught that first, otherwise your question comes across like "have you stopped beating your wife yet".May I suggest you start here: https://www.lds.org/manual/gospel-principles/chapter-47-exaltation?lang=engIn fact, if you are interested in things LDS, then reading the entire manual, which shouldn't take too long, would be a very wise thing to do.
